We stayed for three nights at the Merkister, initially we did not book an evening meal but after eating in the hotel restaurant the first night we booked for the remaining two!! excellent menu choice, fresh produce, and an excellent breakfast too. Possibly the cleanest hotel room we have ever stayed in (we are regular hotel guests all over the... More

We have just returned home from yet another stay at this comfortable hotel. We have been staying here for a special treat since 2003 when we first visited on our honeymoon. It's a comfortable and friendly hotel in a beautiful part of Orkney. The rooms are clean and tidy and comfortable (possibly in need of a bit of an update,... More

The service and the food deserve an excellent rating, but the hotel rooms themselves are only average.Hence the overall score is between the two. We had some issues with our first room, but the staff were very helpful and found us another room for the remaining nights. We enjoyed our evening meals, especially being able to look over the loch... More

This family run hotel looks out over Harray Loch, so a great view. We had been warned that our room was small and at the back of the hotel (the only one available for the nights we wanted), but the beds were very comfortable and the room adequate. Alas the en-suite was less so, accessible through a rather wobbly sliding... More

Spent 3 nights here, using a bicycle to sightsee. It is in a spendidly isolated situation, even by Orkney standards, off the main track and looking out over the Loch of Harray (it is principally a fishing base, I think). Staff all very friendly and helpful, and good storage for my bike. The public areas of the hotel are spacious,... More

Managed a lovely lunch but couldn't get booked for dinner - no wonder! Lovely meal, great menu, and good value for money. Our family lunch, main course and desert X 3 were all really great... try the sticky toffee pudding 😉

The staff in the hotel were all extremely polite and helpful. A real family atmosphere. Its not a grand or luxurious hotel but its spotlessly clean and we didn't need anything beyond what was provided. The bar and restaurant both look out over the large fishing lake so the atmosphere in both is really lovely. We ate in the restaurant... More

We very much enjoyed our first (but not last) visit to the Merkister Hotel. Our room was lovely with two windows overlooking the loch. The bed was very comfortable and the standard of cleanliness all over the hotel was very impressive. We very much enjoyed our evenings in the residents' lounge, complete with an "honesty bar" and free coffee chatting... More

I have visited Orkney many times for bird watching but it was the first visit for my wife so I took her to the best in Orkney and Merkister House is it. We had an excellent suite no 1 which I would recommend for the size, location and view. Outstanding!!

Very nice stay with a comfortable room and wonderful food. The staff were friendly and helpful. I was even allowed to charge my electric car there overnight. Surrounding countryside and views from the hotel are spectacular, especially if you are there for the wildlife. Not far from the Ring of Brodgar and Stones of Stenness. A very good place to... More
