Rooms have names from Tess of the D'Urbervilles, as this is Hardy country. Very quaint, lots of character. Unfortunately the cold tap in the sink in our bathroom did not turn off, but basically that was the only flaw. Price included breakfast, and we were expecting continental fare, but there was an extensive breakfast menu as well, and we had... More

The Pure Drop Inn from Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles is just as you imagine it from the book, forming the left hand side of the Crown, with the priest hole and two further rooms which are quite delightful, including a private dining room. The main bar and dining areas offer plentiful seating arrangements and there is a good... More

Lovely historical inn. Mentioned in Thomas Hardy's Tess of the Durbervilles. Comfortable room, it even had a fridge. Excellent service and good food. A good choice at breakfast. Would recommend the full English.

Under new management - husband wife and attentive staff. Fifteen of us booked for lunch and were very well looked after by the attentive staff, enjoying well prepared local fare. Nothing too fussy and none of that trendy nouvelle cuisine - just well cooked large portions of everything.

Having experienced the excellent food at numerous other establishments run by John and Sue, I wasn't disappointed. The food was excellent, cooked perfectly and served hot. The staff were friendly and helpful. The Crown has great ambience and history and is a must if you are in the area, whether for a light bite, a three course meal, a just... More

I came in with my family Saturday night. We did not book a table in advance but luckily could be fit in! The pub was pretty much full so we weren't expecting brilliant service but the staff checked on us and made sure we were okay for drinks and everything else whilst we were waiting for our food! Upon paying... More

I've been here on many occasions and generally it's been a nice pub and ok food for a country pub, simple and enough of it. Tonight was a disaster. It started off with photocopy menus which had seen better days. I wasn't the only customer who thought this as the next table queried the concept thinking they were temporary menus... More

My wife and I had been travelling through Dorset looking for possible areas to retire to and we popped in to this pub one Saturday lunchtime. We were immediately greeted by a polite young man who was already serving customers and he told us he would be with us shortly. Just minutes later he was serving us and we ordered... More

We have eaten at the Crown dozens of times since moving to Dorset in 2000. We have seen landlords come and go, and the quality of the food vary over the years, but the ambience of this lovely place, with its roaring inglenook fire (even in May in the cool spring of 2015) stone walls and old furniture, never changes.... After my stay here last September I couldn't wait to return with my boyfriend and sample their wonderful cheesy chips I have ben dreaming about all winter. What a disappointment ;-(( The Crown has changed hands over the winter and the standard of the food has taken a real knock - not only were the cheesy chips not a patch... More
