On being shown to our ground floor, ensuite room the first impressions were very good – bright, reasonable-size, south-facing with views of Ballard Down and sea glimpses, clean white linen with a neat bundle of John Lewis towels on the big comfortable bed. Then we noticed the damp patch in the ceiling; chipped and ill-fitting laminate flooring and dirty edges;... More

We sat in the garden area. This was littered with lots of rubbish . Our daughter is crawling so we had to ensure she hadn't picked up the rubbish . We ordered food at 12 and it did arrive very quickly . Almost too quickly. I ordered salmon with veg and potatoes . Salmon not cooked properly had just been... More

I forgot, I mean... More

Stopped here hoping for some lunch. Walked in to a lovely olde worldy pub but with an over-whelming smell of dogs which immediately put me off wanting to eat. Nothing against dogs but they should not be allowed in eating areas when tables are quite close together. However, looking at the menu, the prices were astronomical! So we decided on... More

Lovely location and should be terrific inside but all feels a bit packed and tatty unless youve got one of the 3 or 4 prime location tables inside - towards the fire. Decent menu but maybe too broad for the crowds they get. Staff are friendly enough dealing with LOTS of people, some impatient and many hnging on hovering for... More

Avoid. Dreadful food. Dreadful pub interior. Dreadful service. To top it all dirty. The management/owners do not care about you - just extracting money out of your wallet!!! It is obviously a well known tourist destination as the pub relies on tourism. We should have known better by trying it out (our taxi driver warned us about it on the... More

Ate here last year and enjoyed the food but on our return visit today we were very disappointed. Both ordered the fish pie, supposedly fish in a cheese sauce, little evidence of cheese in the watery sauce , a lot of undercooked leeks and the content of the pies very variable. One mostly salmon the other mainly white fish. I... More

I love crab so chose the crab salad. Yuk! A whole dressed crab, plonked on some leaves with a pile of red pepper and the odd tomatoe. I asked the waiter for some dressing and he said he'd get some and be back but we never saw him again. The salad had no onions to liven it up and the... More

The Bankes Arms is pretty much all you want from a holiday pub. Good food, quick service and an amazing view. All at a reasonable cost too. Ok you won't bump into Giles Coren or Charles Campion at the next table, there are plenty of other places in Dorset that offer fine dining. But if you and your family want... More
