This could be a gem but... Pros - pretty location, good bar and adequate food. Cons - service is slow and inefficient, rooms require maintenance, some rooms have a shared bathroom (the bath is fitted with a shower but no shower curtain, so useless, and the WC is in the same room as the bath - so expect a wait!)... My family has lived in the area for decades and so we have visited several times each year going to this pub perhaps once or twice a year. Great location but in need of investment to update. Always v busy and menu often reduced due to certain things running out. Good selection of beers, plenty of staff and service reasonable.... More

If other reviews are anything to go by, I think tonights lottery draw may also prove a winner. We ate at about 5pm, and both chose sea bass with chips and salad. The pub was quiet to how we remember it, judging by the reviews perhaps hardly surprising. Nevertheless the bar staff were attentive and efficient. Our food was served... More

My wife and I have visited the bankes arms many times 10/15 years ago and were always impressed with the food plus the location. So back in the area with our 2 children we thought great can,t go wrong . How wrong could we be the thai curry and the jamican chicken tasted like boil in the bag dinners .... More

We stopped off for lunch, and although the food was OK, there was definitely room for improvement. The prices seemed quite high compared to other establishments, although I presume you are paying extra for the location. Staff friendly enough, however the place needs a makeover. Cobwebs presume add to the feel of sitting in what was probably an old stable.

Very disappointed after good honest pub meal last summer....my beef bourginion was so dry I nearly choked, no red wine, no herbs but plenty of silver skin pickled onions!!! My mother couldn't eat her tuna (she kept gagging) with a crusty paper pot of 'salsa' that looked like it had come off of several people's plates beforehand! This social salsa... More

We stayed at the Bankes Arms about 6 years ago and had a lovely time, so we thought we' d return for a mini-break. Apart from the location being as stunning as it always is - standards at the Bankes Arms seems to have deteriorated during that time. Our bedroom (Room 1) - apart from the view - was in... More

Had remembered this pub as being far nicer so felt v v let down. The location is still lovely but the pub garden was covered in litter and broken glass, cigarettes ends etc, no excuse for not clearing that up. Peak holiday season and lots of children running who could get hurt, not good enough. We all had ploughmans lunches... More

Such a let down, I was really looking forward to staying here and in such a stunning location but the accommodation is awful, room 6 has a water tank or something above it, so any time from 05.40 onwards you can forget about a peaceful sleep. Breakfast was good the first day but dry and overcooked the next day. Nothing... More

Arrived at 3.30 and a harassed bar staff arrived to take us to room. No explanations about breakfast time ( strict 8.30-9.30 only ) wifi or doors locking at 11. Room ok nothing more. Loo seat loose and wobbly, creamer for coffee two months out of date! ( curdled hence discovery). Breakfast staff member didn't arrive until 08.45 with some... More
