Combe House is so much more than a beautiful country house hotel - genuinely attentive and caring staff from the moment we arrived. We were thrilled to be given an upgrade to an amazing suite and then a wonderful dinner and wine to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We stayed here ten years ago and loved it - and ten years... What a difference there is between country house hotels. I recently stayed at Bovey Castle, and was underwhelmed by the experience(see review),and shortly afterwards visited this hotel for a family lunchtime meeting(though not to stay). The experience at Combe House was enormously more enjoyable. It's not on the same scale,of course, but the grounds and the building were both delightful, and the private... More

A superb Country House in an excellent setting. Staff, room and restaurant were all exceptional and we would recommend without hesitation. Location convenient for coast and countryside and gardens interesting to walk around

This hotel is outstanding in terms of service, quality and location. Not counting the staff or the views though, the restaurant was probably the best thing about our stay . The dishes were subtle and complex, relying on top quality ingredients - many locally sourced - and the menu was varied and well-judged. The sweetbreads, which we both had as... More

We spent the night at this wonderful hotel and it was superb in every respect. From the moment I booked our room with Fiona,to the welcome we received as we pulled up at the front of the hotel, the best team spirit I have witnessed in any establishment, the room, the views, the food, the drink, the atmospheric hall with open fire where we snuggled... One is welcomed to make this one's own home during a stay. Staff is around but not in your face and is most professional. The owners are often in the main parts of the hotel and very friendly. The rooms are charming, both the public ones and the bedrooms. The food is delicious. We ate one dinner there but it... More

We stayed for two nights - one night in the Marker Suite and one night in The Thatched Cottage. Both rooms were great but we felt that the cottage should have more up to date equipment (especailly the TV which had a dreadful reception). The internet connection was impossible to connect to at the cottage too! Despite this the bed... More

This hotel is so very special. From the verdant surrounds, the crisp gravel drive, the imposing facade to the detail of each and every corner of this hotel there is passion and professionalism. Not only is the house a heritage treasure, it runs like clockwork. Our meal in the dining room was romantic and delicious. The staff friendly and attentive.... More

I attended a corporate event for 40 people and it was spectacular! The setting, the sunshine and the service were faultless. The food was incredible and I don't think I have ever eaten a better Beef Wellington! All the staff were excellent, extremely attentive but never imposing.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Award For Excellence - Conde Nast Johansens 2014. In Top Best Foodie Hotels in SW England - voted by readers of Food magazine. Combe House Devon is a stunning 450-year old Elizabethan Manor, set in 3,500 acres of one of Devon's finest estates. It's informal, relaxing and hugely romantic, and wherever you wander (and there's quite a bit of it) something magnificent catches the eye. Devon foodies will undoubtedly have heard of Combe House. The acclaimed restaurant is highly praised as one of the best in the south west, and service is genuinely faultless. There is loads of local game and fresh fish and most of the vegetable and herbs come from the restored Victorian kitchen gardens. The support for local producers and seasonal dishes here is obsessive - and with good reason. The restaurants are popular and The Good Food Guide 2014 describes Combe House as a 'seductive hotel with seriously good dining'. Hadleigh Barrett and Stuart Brown, Master Chefs of Great Britain, are responsible for a changing menu packed with interesting meat and fish options, from scallops with creamy tarragon gnocchi to seared duck breast with braised red cabbage. The cellar is what you'd expect from a grand old country house - but all wines are chosen less to impress than serve the season, mood or nature of their dishes. Eat in one of two spacious dining rooms with traditional fire places. Admire the murals, relish the atmosphere, enjoy the flavours from mercifully well-spaced tables. You'll always receive a warm welcome - it's best to book ahead for lunch and dinner. Genuine hospitality is always on the menu. ... more   less
