The Chapel at The Oratory - Lovely, private, comfortable accommodation in the heart of Dartmoor. Recently completely refurbished by new owners in keeping with its historical heritage, The Chapel offers luxurious and spacious ensuite accommodation, which sleeps up to four, with its own private entrance and hallway, a large bathroom with underfloor heating, a deluxe bath and separate shower. The original Edwardian bed has been described by many guests as being the most comfortable bed they have ever slept in, and there is plenty of room for two additional guests as the day bed converts into two full size single beds. Perfect for a romantic break away, family holiday or for exploring the moor. Family and dog friendly. With cots, highchairs, microwave and tabletop stove etc available on request for guest use. Ideal location on Dartmoor for walking/hiking and enjoying the fresh air and beautiful scenery. Optional delicious Continental breakfast available. Pubs and cafes nearby (200m).

The couple that run this place were very helpful and welcoming. I can't praise them enough with what they offered for our stay. The location was easy to find and the room itself was amazing. Very spacious and comfy with lots of nice touches to make the stay more enjoyable, like books, games and an information pack sent before arriving of places to eat out and additional services if required. The room was clean and tidy. It had so much more character than the generic chain run motel/hotels. We would definitely be recommending this place to anyone looking for an amazing, quality, professionally run, yet welcoming place to stop over to anyone and everyone.

The Oratory provided us with a great base for our recent holiday in Devon. The accommodation was clean, well-equipped with very comfortable beds, and the hosts were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The ‘rain’ shower and roll-top bath added an extra bit of luxury. We will definitely return!

Firstly, I must apologies to the owners as I promised to do a write-up ages ago but I lost my Trip Advisor account details which were linked to an old e-mail address. But better late than ever... So me and the wife stayed during the great "let out" of August 2020, and followed everyone else like sheep to the South-West. We stayed here since we'd stayed here several times before with the previous owners when I've been in Princetown for the "Dartmoor Discovery" ultra-marathon. We didn't know there were new owners in place, but they are just as friendly and welcoming. It is lovely accommodation a short walk from the village centre, but right in the middle of Dartmoor, there's street parking outside and we've never had an issue getting a place. The room is quite spacious and very comfortable, with a comfy sofa to sit in and numb-out with Pointless Celebrities or whatever you fancy watching. A continental breakfast was provided with fresh bread and plenty of fruit to last you all day out and about. Plenty of options nearby if you want a cooked breakie. I'm a gannet so we went to the Old Police Station for a full English. For evening options there's the Plume of Feathers which is a short walk away with plenty of real ale and a wide range of good food on offer. We had hoped to go to the Dartmoor Prison museum, but unfortunately, due to C-19, this was closed. The person we got to speak to there was gutted because he was getting many enquiries, but they come under the management of the prison and H&S got in the way. Will definitely stay here again. Many thanks.

We found the Oratory a perfect place to stay for a fabulous Dartmoor break. It is very comfy and clean and is in a great location for exploring the moors around Princetown, we didn't use the car once. The breakfast food is delicious and kept us going all day, we took some out on our walks and both pubs are great for food in the evenings. The owners are very friendly & helpful but at the same time you have your own space. We appreciated the lovely bath & the comfy bed after some long sunny walks. I've been coming to Dartmoor for over 30 years, stayed in lots of places, almost all have been excellent too, so the best recommendation I can give is to say we can't wait to return!

We were greeted by Jeanette (We couldn't find the key safe, so our fault) and she kindly showed us where it was. Jeanette let us into the chapel and it was absolutely lovely. The decor was perfect and everything was clean and tidy. We didn't have breakfast but Jeanette told us that the fox in the square was very good, and it was indeed very good. We enjoyed our stay and Jeanette was very accommodating.... the only problem we had were the pillows, too soft for us, but that's just our personal preference.

Thank you so much for your lovely comments and your feedback. So sorry that the soft pillows were a problem for you - there were additional pillows available in the large willow basket in The Chapel which you would have been more than welcome to use. And you are quite right - The Fox Tor Cafe is excellent!

We stayed 4 nights in the chapel annex and would certainly stay again. The room is very spacious with a lower sitting/kitchenette area (fridge, kettle, toaster, microwave, but no sink - they took the dishes to wash when requested) and a slightly raised mezzanine sleeping area with a comfy bed, sofa, wardrobe, chest of drawers and tv. The bookshelf with masses of info about Dartmoor and surrounding areas was very useful. The bathroom is huge with separate bath & shower. The chapel annex has its own entrance which means you're completely private and can come & go as you please. The hosts were really lovely even when we had to disturb them late on a Sunday. The weather was appalling for half of our stay but this was the perfect place to escape it in great comfort! And when it's good you can walk out onto the moor directly. The rate advertised on the site I booked through turned out to be for bed only, but Jeanette provided continental breakfast for an extra charge including home made bread and a huge jug of fresh orange juice. Would definitely recommend.

We have been using the Oratory for business travel in the area and it has served our purpose perfectly. The accommodation is self contained with own entrance and comprises of one large bedroom and a luxury bathroom accessed through a private entrance with a hallway to take off muddy shoes etc. The bathroom has a large bath and separate shower and underfloor heating. The owner leaves one hand towel and one bath towel each. The main room has a mezzanine area with a double bed with an electric blanket. There is also a sofa, wardrobe, chest of drawers. There is a hairdryer. The lower level down 3 steps has a daybed, proper sized dining table and chairs and an area to heat up food. There is a small unit with 2 hotplates and small oven, a microwave, fridge and toaster and ample pots and pans but there is no sink or water supply in this area so it's only really suitable to heat things up. The host, Jeanette is really helpful so we made ourselves food in the evening and in the morning she put all the plates etc in her dishwasher and left them for us clean on our return. Nothing was too much trouble and I felt very welcome and at home. It's in a great position with lots of privacy and is much larger than you would expect for this type of accommodation. The internet connection is good enough.Mobile signal is a bit patchy. We're both on O2. My phone got 1-2 bars of signal. My husbands phone got none. All in all, it's a great place to stay.

My wife and I stayed in The Oratory for a few nights and the accommodations were excellent: spacious, clean, and well-appointed. The host, Chris, was pleasant and very helpful. A truly great value and a perfect base for exploring Dartmoor.

contract said 3pm entry. Phoned day before finally got through after 8pm. Told cleaner would be about 5pm 2 hours late. Key would be in key safe and we could go in any time after 1.00 pm but would not be cleaned till 5pm. Arrived 2.45pm no key in key safe! place looked deserted, phoned turned off so no one to contact. Cleaner arrived 4.45 and let us in. Chris arrived 6pm said it was the previous guests fault no key not his. Bed linen changed but crumpled and grubby looking. Cups very armed and one with big crack bought our own to use, also glass cracked. Told email Sally then wifi suddenly wouldn't work, Chris knocked on interconnecting door, waited two seconds and walked in, was about to get changed could have been very embarrassing . No lock annexe side of door into the main house. Came to wash dishes at 6 pm and was annoyed we had already done as assumed it was not being done. We are in our 70s my husband had been ill and hoped to relax instead found very stressful, in retrospect should have come home but long journey down in the rain and going into Cornwall afterwards, also probably would have been charged. Very disappointed with no phone call to say about the cleaner being late andd state of bedding, Chris attitude and lack of privacy, didn't know when he would walk in again, a stressful and anxious couple of days. Thankfully Cornwall was everything we hoped this would be. We should really have been contacted about the cleaner as soon as they knew, and given the opportunity to cancel this booking especially as Sally was away and Chris obviously didn't want to be bothered.

Dear Maureen, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience and feedback on your recent stay with us. We do regret to hear that your check in didn’t go well, we had discussed with you my phone that on that day in question due to an important prior commitment by our wonderful cleaning lady that the room would not be available till later in the day and you were initially happy with that. You choose though to arrive prior to Check In at 2.45 and the indeed the room had not been made up by the cleaning lady and all checks had not been completed. Unfortunately our cleaning lady who is a wonderful, diligent and trusted member of the team here at The Oratory became very upset by your manner, flustered and yes indeed may have missed a cup in the kitchenette. I am sorry you felt the need to upset her. On Chris’s arrival home at 6pm from work (we are a very small business), Chris welcomed you and even arranged the cleaning of your dogs soiled bedding following an incident on the journey down to us. We pride ourselves on customer service and receive repeated 4 if not 5 star reviews on Trip Advisor. You mention the bedding not being to your standard, I am sorry you took offense to the lovely Joules bedding that most guests comment most favourably on. We do as per all establishments and come in and service the rooms, knocking and waiting prior to entering, you are very welcome to decline this service. Chris tried everything to help and assist you during your stay, he gave you the first night free to make up for your stress induced, by your early arrival. You would have been very welcome to check out, however, you stayed for three nights. Having had a look at your other reviews left for other establishments it really does seem that very little pleases you, and I am sorry that despite our best efforts our lovely B&B didn’t meet your exacting standards.
