Fishing up a 12 day photo shoot, we decided to treat ourselves and stay here. Located smack tab in the middle of Rapid City, it was great. Helpful staff, cool rooftop club, coffee bar in lobby and in room too. Very nice old fashioned Western theme lobby --a perfect end to our Black Hills trek about. Can't believe we have... More

At first I was apprehensive about the Alex Johnson because my first impression reminded me of a funky, make-do kind of place common to many small towns. By the end of my visit, the Alex Johnson, and Rapid City, sold me completely. This property has a sweet personality, and personality is exactly what is missing from the corporate chain hotels.... I really felt at home at the Alex Johnson Hotel. Everyone was most friendly, courteous, pleasant and it was obvious that customer service was very important. The room always smelled good and I don't know why, but it did. The hallway however smelled of cigarette smoke, but never our room. I was able to relax and read in the lobby... More

This is an odd one to review because the potential for better is there. The location is the best if you plan on being downtown. Paddy's happy hour in the lobby bar is ridiculously awesome and should be attended regardless if you are staying at the hotel or not. But the service in the establishment was beyond subpar. Upon check-in... More

Stayed here with my husband in Septermber 2014. We checked in late, after 9pm, and they only had a room with two double beds available. I asked if it would be possible to change rooms the next day and they said most likely so I took the double bed room. To my amazement, the bed was probably the most comfortable... More

Stayed at this hotel because I like historic hotels that have some character. This place is unique with the Native American motifs throughout (the founder was an admirer of Native American culture) - really different and apparently the lobby has been carefully preserved over the years. I also learned that 6 presidents have stayed at the hotel. Enjoyed looking at... More

A historic hotel but modern and comfortable rooms. Great location with easy walking distance to shops, galleries, and restaurants. parking is a real problem with limited street parking and it uses a city parking structure several blocks away. You have to park on the top level and negotiate 3 floors of stairs with no elevator. Got a very good price... More

I recently traveled here for business and stayed here upon the recommendation of a local. Although the rooftop bar/restaurant views are nice and the rooftop fire pits are cozy, it is not worth the stay. The parking situation is terrible as the garage is over a block away. I actually got a ticket in the garage even though I had... More

I stayed here for 2 nights. Because the hotel was built in the twenties, it was was dated. You really can't remodel a hotel like this and have it remain historical. The front desk clerk was helpful and friendly. Doorman, Luke, was like a breath of fresh air. He was one of the friendliest people I've encountered. Bed was comfortable.... More

Me and my wife stayed at the hotel for about two days passing through South Dakota on our way to Chicago from California. The whole "historic" concept is really appealing, but for a hotel so popular and meaningful to its location a little renovation wouldn't hurt. The room was a bit dirty with nasty bed sheets and an awful smell.... More
