Love the sculptures, love the maze, love the gift shop -soaps and the syrup are must buy! Love how it opens up to water and has beautiful places to just walk, sit, and take pictures! Please keep noise levels low as some people are on retreats on the grounds.

This is a pretty and interesting place to visit. The hospitality and friendliness was apparent in every one we spoke to.They have a lovely gift shop with some nice local items as well as fresh or dried mushrooms grown on the abbey and some really fragrant candles. They have an adopted dog who roams the grounds greeting every one who... More

Loved the history of the founding of the Abbey. Beautiful grounds, too bad that on the day I visited it was raining. I suggest you go on a day it isn't raining in order to enjoy the beautiful gardens and and the view of the Cooper River. A very nice gift shop!

We drove into the abbey and stopped at the visitors center. There was a scheduled monastery tour at 3 which we did not have time to do. The grounds were beautiful with Azeleas. There is not much else to see and would only takers than an hour minus the monastery tour.

We went in the month of December when they had their annual creche display. There were about 60 of them from around the world, both traditional and unique. What an incredible display! The gift shop is great, featuring their famous mushrooms and drizzle.

If you are a spiritual person, particularly Christian though you needn't be catholic, do not pass up a week or weekend retreat here. Amazing price for the stay, amazing opportunities to be completely alone, to immerse yourself in the monastic lifestyle, and/or enjoy amazing gardens-- take your pick. I recommend coming alone, bringing many books, and wearing soft-soled shoes (my... More

My husband and I went to Mepkin Abby after visiting Cypress Gardens in the morning. We got there around 4pm, so we had missed both of the tours for the day but the nice woman in the gift shop explained that the gardens were open until 6 so we should make ourselves at home and that there is a bench... They do have cabins they let people stay in and join the mocks in daily life, but we didn't stay. Still, it was a great day. I have often said that if you spend a week in Charleston, make a point to do a Cooper River swing to Cypress Gardens, Santee Canal Park, here, and Biggin Church ruins. Get there... More

We read about Mepkin Abbey and decided to take a side trip. This abbey is located in a rural setting, the site of historic Mepkin Plantation, north of Charleston,SC. Should you wish to visit the Church, there are guided tours at 11:30AM (Tuesday -Saturday) and at 3PM (Tuesday- Sunday). Enjoy the gardens at your leisure. The area is beautiful and... More
