We loved our stay at the Rice Hope Plantation. We were the only guests that night in the big old mansion and it was dark, quiet, and a bit spooky. My wife and I spent two nights in this beautiful location. I read the review from May 2007 and found it to be way off the mark with little or no knowledge of the surrounding area. This was a beautiful and quiet plantation in a remote area 40 minutes from Charleston. The garden was gorgeous and the rooms were charming. I would characterize it as shabby/chic. Rice Hope Plantation is advertised as a plantation on many, many acres with extensive grounds. In reality, the acreage is underwater- the former rice fields in the river are what the owners say is the plantation's considerable acreage. The brochure and the website promise "luxurious guest rooms/suites". That is not exactly accurate. The rooms are rustic at best and the cleaning is haphazard. The innkeepers don't live in the actual house, leaving guests feeling vulnerable and "on their own" especially since they don't lock the doors at night and this place is out in, literally, the middle of... more
