We parked our car in this Inn's parking lot and never moved it. We and our dog loved staying in the quiet carriage house quarters in the rear and having breakfast either delivered to our room or being served to us on the lovely, uncrowded patio. The food was varied and delicious; selection was great. The concierges were quick to... More

We have just spent 4 nights in Suite 4 at the Rutledge Inn. This is an enormous 2 room suite with a very nice bathroom - large shower, no tub. The four poster canopy bed was extremely comfortable. The towels the nicest I had ever had anywhere. The a/c unit worked well. There is a refrigerator and each morning fresh... More

Large rooms with great service. In the middle of the night, the concierge brought us 2 diet cokes from the vending machine when we called, and in the morning, the innkeeper knew who we were and wished us a happy anniversary! Breakfast in the courtyard was fantastic...try the grits!

Full disclosure: My family is in the hospitality business. So maybe my standards are higher than they should be. However.... The John Rutledge House was a big disappointment. Since we had never been to Charleston before, we did a lot of research before choosing a place to stay. We chose John Rutledge House because it was a historic property, and... More

This was a girlfriends' trip for the Garden Walk and we chose the John Rutledge House for its appearance online, the courtyard, the location, and the Carriage House rooms. From the time we entered our room(s) to checking out, it was a most enjoyable five days! The breakfasts (most days in the courtyard) were lovely and several choices were offered.... More

For our first trip to Charleston, we chose to stay for 3 nights at the John Rutledge House. It was the perfect introduction to the city! Quiet location, personable, friendly and helpful staff and full of southern charm!. It's within walking distance of everything. The plantations are further away, but there are all sorts of ways to get out to... More

This was a surprise visit to downtown Charleston to celebrate our anniversary. This inn has so much history and the staff was fantastic. The inn keeper could not have been more welcoming and kind. The tea was lovely and we enjoyed sitting on the porch while we had tasty snacks and tea. Of course cordials are available as well. We... More

My wife and stayed here for two nights. We were greeted very warmly on our arrival. The desk manager gave us an excellent summary of what was available in Charleston. Our room on the third floor was spacious and quiet. The breakfasts which were delivered to our room were very good. The late afternoon hors d'oeuvres and sherries and port... More

We arrived Sunday night & Michael was there to welcome us. Our room was downstairs (#2) & I liked it immediately. Large & well appointed, flat screen TV temperpedic mattress. Michael had recommended this room to us as he said the bathrooms had just been redone. Very nicely I might add. We filled out our breakfast card, delighted by the... More

The John Rutledege House Inn has a a super location where the commercial and residential areas of the historic downtown meet. It is a short and pleasant walk to the large park at the Battery in one direction and to dozens of shops and restaurants in another. Our first floor accommodations in the original carriage house were spacious and the... More

Hotel Class:4 star — John Rutledge House Inn 4*
Official Description (provided by the hotel):
America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more   less
