Maderas Village is a place I will not forget. My husband and I were convinced to go visit by a friend who had been there 2x before. It was a 2.5 hour drive from the airport and required a four wheel drive jeep to get up the unpaved dirt road. I was a little hesitant at first. Coming from Florida... More

Maderas is located in the middle of no where which is a cool idea for a stay as you are able to relax and forget about stress from back home. I really liked the idea of a yoga/surf haven but the rooms were more hostel/dorm style and it was almost impossible to sleep there as the walls are paper thin... More

Hi DB, thanks for your review. Pleased to hear that you enjoyed the service, food, yoga, surf, proximity to the beach, cleanliness, and other guests so much. Disappointed to hear that the room didn't live up to expectations and that you had to share a bathroom; next time I'd recommend booking into one of our Casitas, Cabanas, or any of... More

Beautiful place, great service and incredible surfing. Staff are very nice, but a few of the guys that work there definitely have the 'too cool for school' vibe. Other travelers who we have met in Leon and Grenada have said the same thing about the vibe of the staff during their stay. We are all in our twenties, and we... More

Thanks for taking the time to post your review. We do genuinely apologize that the tax was a surprise. We are a legitimate business that reports our revenue and is strictly governed by the Nicaraguan department of taxation and labour. Most hostels or Nicaraguan owned establishments operate on a cash-basis and do not pay tax, and thus, do not charge... More

Like some of the previous reviewers, I too was hesitant about what this experience would entail but it was nothing short of life changing. The village is like one big family. There ex-pat types that live there, locals that live and work there, regulars that seem to come back every few months and then the first time visitor like my... More

After reading some of the negative reviews I'm pleased to report that Maderas Village is not some clique-y, hipster, North American haven. It's actually quite the contrary. I visited Maderas for five nights with my boyfriend. It's very laid back from the moment you arrive. Jo greeted us like a long lost friend and made us feel welcomed within seconds.... More

The last time I was at Playa Maderas I stayed at the Buena Vista Surf Club which was AMAZING. The service was phenomenal. When they were sold out, I ended up at "The Village" which was pretty comparable in price. I wasn't sure what to expect as the website is not that great. It is almost like a playhouse for... More

Thanks for taking the time to post your review and apologies for the delayed response. We agree BVSC is absolutely amazing. They are both neighbours of ours and good friends, so fully agree with you there. We also agree that we have a different vibe from them. We tend to attract creative professionals, free-wheeling travelers, and/or entrepreneurial and socially-minded guests... More

We had high expectations of the place after seeing the pics online, thought we would be staying in a well run place and would get to know the people we saw on the facebook and instagram pictures. We expected to have a cosy room, good food and do lots of yoga. The good thing is the food was pretty good.... More

Maderas village is very pleasing to the eye. The rooms are beautiful and clean but there are howler monkeys outside your room that wake you up every morning around 5am. We were picked up from the airport with a shuttle provided by the hotel which was convenient. It was also $100. If you take the "chicken bus", it probably would... More

We booked Maderas Village for a few "splurge" nights on our trip; $90+14% tax is a lot for Nicaragua. While the kind bed was a nice treat, the room had a basement-ey feel to it. It was in a house type building, but the top 2 floors were for a common area and massage loft. 1 little window at head height... More

In the jungle 20 minutes from San Juan del Sur, a man- and car-eating dirt road drops you off at a cluster of buildings and private casitas with thatched roofs. Tropical hardwood furniture and accessories produced by the founders' sustainable furniture company (think massive glossy stumps and sleek wood accents, from key chains to cutting boards) set the stage, sweeping... Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We are located at Maderas Beach, about 20 minutes outside of San Juan del Sur. We offer a three daily meals, either a la carte or as part of a pre-fixe menu. We are like a boutique hotel, but less pretentious. We love people who want a place to surf, read, debate, and do yoga daily; who want to lose themselves in a place, and find themselves in the people. We offer tailored packages for short-term guests and very reasonably priced rates for people planning to stay longer than 3 weeks. We are not in Lonely Planet or other guidebooks; we like having to be found. ... more   less
