The Mark Spencer is a very well maintained older building. The location is great, near Downtown and the Pearl District with lots of coffee shops and bars close by. The room was very clean and comfortable, the staff was very friendly and my wife and I really enjoyed the coffee/breakfast in the lobby. One night I needed help connecting to... More

We chose the Mark Spencer because of it's location and the kitchenette. We were very happy with our choice. Our room was at the front on the 4th floor. Even with the street cars passing it was very quiet. This hotel is undergoing a renovation but we neither saw nor heard any disruption. We booked a Jr. Queen Suite and... More

As other reviews say, great location near the Pearl District and two short blocks from Powell Books and lots of restaurants. The room was a comfortable size; none too big, and had good amenities. A good base for exploring Portland

I stayed here for one night after a long drive up from the Bay Area for work. While the location is wonderful, close to Powell's books etc, I found the service and room to be somewhat lacking in quality. I arrived late (around 9pm) and was given a room on the fifth floor. During check in I was told that... More

We booked a queen suite in the Washington Place building associated with the Mark Spencer ( all the normal hotel rooms were booked). This suite is located in apartment building with key card access at three points. The room is tiny, literally 15x15 ft room, with a kitchenette. The bathroom is so small, it reminded me of the bathroom in an... More

I would like to offer my apologies for our annexed rooms not being as comfortable as you would have liked. While these rooms are not part of the Mark Spencer Hotel, we do offer them to our guests that want this particular downtown location when our hotel is sold out. The annex will also be getting a transformation this fall.... More

Friendly staff, Large and clean room at a fair price. Loved the area as there were plenty of great bars and resturaunts nearby....and a streetcar stop right outside so all areas of Portland are accessable.

This hotel is in the process of renovating its rooms, and we were lucky enough to stay in one that has been recently updated. The look is modern, clean, and comfortable. Excellent beds, beautiful bathrooms. Our room actually wrapped around the elevators, which worried me at first, but the new rooms have excellent soundproofing and it wasn't an issue at... More

I'm so happy you found our new rooms to be comfortable as well as beautiful. We're very excited about the transformation and love it when our guests get excited, too! It's good to hear that noise was not an issue being next to the elevator. We have added extra layers of insulation between each guestroom to reduce the amount of... More

I stayed at the Mark Spencer with my boyfriend and our dog for one night during a quick visit to Portland. We arrived at 12pm and were able to check-in straight away, even though official check-in time wasn't until 4pm. As we had a dog with us we stayed in a room on the second floor (floors 1 and 2... I enjoyed reading your review and all the Portland places you found to fall in love with! I'm sure the three of you (pup included, of course!) had a great time exploring the city. With regard to the room you were in, I agree that the TV is in an odd place for viewing from the bed. These rooms are... More

You really couldn't ask for a better location: downtown within walking distance, Powell's books two blocks away, public transport to anywhere in the city within three short blocks, and lots of restaurants nearby. Also, if you want to get a kitchenette, there is a Whole Foods two blocks away for groceries. We ended up in an unrenovated room, which was... More

I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed walking around our beautiful city! Even though the city blocks are short, Portland manages to attract many wonderful restaurants, shops, pubs, etc., to fill them up! My staff is always happy to hear that our guests enjoyed their stay. I will pass along your kind words to my housekeeping staff. We love to... More

The Mark Spence is in an older building within walking distance to most things in downtown Portland. I found parts of the facility a bit dated; You can tell that great effort is put in to maintaining things. Everything was clean. The bed was great. I feel the price was slightly high for the quality.

You're right in recognizing the age of our beautiful, historic building! It was built in 1907 and can boast of being the oldest hotel in Portland. With that said, we are preserving much of the original structure by exposing the brickwork and wooden beams, which can be seen in some of the newly renovated rooms. We are also replacing all... More
