What a great place--no phones, t.v., or radio. The friendly, quiet town of Dufur and its restored, historically famous, turn of the century Balch Hotel is a wonderful place to "unwind," to rest, to revitalize oneself. Outstanding service and food from a friendly customer-comes-first staff. Go! and be glad that you did.

Our stay at the Balch Hotel was truly memorable. This was our first time to the Columbia River Gorge region and we were so pleasantly surprised to arrive in the charming town of Dufur. As we pulled up to the Balch Hotel, my husband and I both immediately recognized what a special jewel we had stumbled upon. This historic hotel... More

This place surpassed all the web photos and descriptions. Nestled in the sleepy town of Dufur, this was a wonderful respite for us to transition after dropping our kids off at college. The grounds are well manicured and there are plenty of comfortable and scenic spaces to collect oneself outside. My favorite was the luscious patio, offering umbrella covered tables... More

This little quaint hotel in Dufur was the site of our friend's wedding. It was an intimate wedding where about a third of the guests were housed in the hotel's lovingly cared for Edwardian era rooms. It had a feel of what it was like to be in a hotel in the early 1900's. Newhart and the Stratfford Inn come... More

Thanks roikiller. Your description is wonderful and will be quite helpful for other guests. We work hard to keep the 'old world charm' and we understand that sometimes it is not for everyone. We are so happy to host weddings and we are so glad that you chose the Balch as the place to bring your family together. More

We stayed at the Balch Hotel August 13, 2015. The owners were very nice! The chocolate chip cookies were great! The grounds were beautiful....as was the hotel! The entire staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was wonderful and the head cook was so personable! It really was like a B & B.

Another totally relaxing visit to the Balch. Great view of Mt Hood from our room on the second level, excellent buffet breakfast, very friendly staff from the front desk to the breakfast chief. We walked the grounds and wished we would of had our wedding here 8 1/2 years ago! We're here now so all is good.

An oasis in the middle of the high desert, this hotel overlooks Mt Hood. Beautifully restored, the proprietors Josiah and Claire are warm and cultured. The outdoor area has a beautiful pond with fish and lotus flowers and the food is delish. Very affordable and great to a great place to get away from it all.

You just had to walk in the door to feel welcomed. Both by the staff and the atmosphere. The hotel had extremely comfortable places inside and out to sit, to read, to talk, to eat- and of course to sleep!. It is steps away from the Historical Museum and downtown. I was here on Threshing Bee weekend and it was within... More

This was our first time and the earlier reviews were right. It was a great find for us. We could only be gone a short time and wish we could have stayed a bit longer than one night. It is like an oasis and the no TV was great! Who needs it with the scenery. We had a cheese and... More

Thanks Yomaira L! We always love for our guests to take the time to relax, but even if you have to keep going on your travels we do what we can to help you enjoy. We are sorry about the noisy air conditioners; obviously not a part of the original hotel. Most nights a/c is not needed and simply opening... More

My husband and I were looking for a unique place to stay when we found The Balch Hotel on Groupon. We spent a night and now plan to come back regularly. It is a very old building built from bricks manufactured nearby. A recent restoration makes the hotel both reminiscent of the era it was built, but with many of... More
