Whilst on a trip to Exmoor last Sunday we called in at the Royal Oak hoping for Sunday lunch. We had not booked but there was a table available. My wife ordered the Beef roast and I chose the Pork. A glass of Chardonnay and an excellent Pinot accompanied our meal. Our meals arrived after a short wait together with... More

The Royal Oak is a characterful but clean and comfortable old inn with welcoming owners and staff, good food and a cosy bar. My room - standard double - was large and well-equipped with comfortable bed, big bathroom with a bath and shower (and plenty of hot water), and a large wardrobe cupboard. The location is ideal for exploring Exmoor,... More

Thank you for taking the trouble to leave a review. All our room heaters are thermo controlled so work harder in colder temperatures to keep the rooms comfortable.. Winsford, as you point out, is a most attractive village. All the team enjoy living here and welcoming people to visit. Regards Eileen More

The room we stayed was AMAZING but the bathroom was freezing cool.We were looking forward to a hot bath and a glass of Champagne after our 4 hour drive .But there was a chance that the Champagne would have iced up .There was no curtains on the windows, it was like a bathroom without a personality. As for the four poster... Clif Nip Thank you for taking the trouble to leave a review. The team are more than a little puzzled by this one and perplexed as to why this reviewer was so complimentary at check out ?? It would not be safe, nor would it be legal, to supply a room guest with an extension lead into a bathroom for... More

Superb place to stay. Completely faultless, wonderful situation. Exmoor is quite idyllic and Windsford is very well situated for touring North and West Devon. Am visiting again shortly with two dogs and have been told they will get same reception as humans.

Stayed once again at the royal oak in winsford, even under new management it was lovely, breakfasts were delicious and lots of it, evening meals were very tasty. Only criticism was that when we got there the room hadn't been used for a couple of days and the heating hadn't been on, it was freezing and took twenty four hours... More

Thank you for your review. We keep a close eye on the weather forecasts, there can very occasionally be an unexpected drop in temperature which we compensate for with auxillary heating. We endeavour to give our guests a choice of eating areas, some prefer a dining room ambience and some like a bar atmosphere. We are aware that the coastal... More

This is a great spot on the edge of Exmoor with lovely rivers and walking all around. We had room 1 which was spacious and comfortable. The inn is very old and does suffer from a spot of damp but the owners have tried to overcome this - not sure they will ever entirely succeed. Our room was very hot... More

Thank you for your review We are a listed building with original single glazed windows and condensation can form if the outside temperature falls below zero, which is rare. The heating is user adjustable in each room. We're not aware of any damp issues, Room 1 has been refurbished and redecorated since your stay ready for the coming season. We... More

With relatives in the village we decided to Have our wedding in Winsford, ceremony in the Church which was beautiful and reception in the Royal Oak. Mark, Sally and the team were very accommodating running up to the day and gave us a free reign in the room we hired. Room was perfect; cozy, warm and beautifully decorated for a... More

The bedroom we had was down a long winding corridor and had a four poster bed with rather old fashioned drapes. The decor is just about OK and the bathroom was outdated. We had dinner in a private room which is good for a shooting party which we were. But the menu. Difficult to know where to start because it... More

The team are disappointed to be described as nothing special as they have recently been graded as excellent by Trip Advisor and Michelin. The Royal Oak is an old thatched building and is listed, parts of which date back to the 12th century and we wouldn't be able to shorten the corridors even if we wanted to. The bathroom in... More

Had a meal with friends here the other evening. We live in the next village and the other four travelled from several miles away. We have been going to the Royal Oak to eat and attend the Staghounds meet for about 15 years or more. The ownership seems to change every few years. Good ale. Fairly conventional pub menu. Good... We stayed for three nights earlier this month, as we love Exmoor and the walking is great. The Inn is very picturesque rambling with a thatched roof. Inside it is as expected a typical country pub.
