I was traveling using points on Virgin Atlantic. The day I wanted to travel was sold out, so I needed to travel a day earlier. I needed a hotel and a place to go. I decided to look up old friends in the small town of Wincanton. I'd been there before and decided this was a good place to return.... More

Pleasant staff. Awful beer. Awful room, decor old, room unclean, towels smelt, bedding dated to be polite, stained sheets. Noisy nightclub under room. Didn't dare stay for breakfast. Was the only room left in the town so had no other choice.

I've been visiting the bear on and off for eight years. The changes made to put the pool table in the front bar area have really detracted from what was a nice character pub in wincanton. I hope it works out, but it puts me off going in there now sadly. At least they still have the fire going in... More

I stayed at the Bear back in June of 2012. I'm sorry for not posting these photos earlier. The photo on Tripadvisor is of another property all together. This is a charming inn with lovely owners. I found the town quiet. I was here visiting friends on my way to a Jasper Fforde convention in Swindon. I will be making... More

We stayed here on Saturday after a cracking day at Wincanton races. The welcome we had on arrival was nice, the pub was busy and had a good selection of food and drinks with the rooms being just what we expected. Sunday morning and what a good breakfast, could'nt ask for more. What more can I say. If you want... More

I have been coming to the Bear for many years, I know Jo and Ian well and promised I would write a review. This is very much a traditional english pub, listed building. Lrge car park and combnation of Lounge and bar area, with a large hall (sweetman) at the back, usually packed with discworld fans as the accomodating owners... More

Trad English pub with the usual hideous carpets, but....tried out the Sunday Roast - so not worth cooking it for one! All local/free range meat, perfect roast potatoes and massive Yorkshire pud [too many/much for me but very good], with a big side serving of 3 veg cooked perfectly al dente; all for £7.25. Also offer an even more 'mega'... More

I have just spent Hogswatch in Wincanton, eating the splendid fare at the Bear Inn. This is a wonderful old traditional pub with a log fire, a genuine welcome, an excellent selection in ales, wines and ciders and amazing food. This was a very busy weekend with over 200 people visiting to celebrate Hogswatch (Terry Pratchett's Discworld New Year). The... More
