We loved the atmosphere here and were made to feel at home by the friendly staff. The rooms were clean and the food tasty with large portions. We would definitely return if we find ourselves in the area again.

Lovely friendly welcoming pub. Lis and Kev make everyone feel like part of the family. Delicious food from the wonderful Brenda in the kitchen. A crackling fire in winter, some great music nights and friendly locals. Even dog friendly!

My family and I rate this pub as our favourite in Richmond. As soon as you walk in there's a warm and welcoming atmosphere (enhanced in the winter months by the roaring coal fire) and it looks and feels exactly how a traditional North Yorkshire market town pub ought to. The food menu has excellent choice ranging from "hoity toity"... More

Although we didn't stay here we had a good few drinks while sitting in front of the fire. A lovely relaxed place we could have sat all night. My only regret was not trying the food next time we stay in Richmond Im going to book here and try the food. An oldy worldly pub that's worth a pint or... More

fantastic room, and breakfast. Very friendly staff, and a brilliant local pub. Food is just gorgeous. Overall very clean and friendly from all staff and new management that is there! Would definitely stay again and recommend to everyone!

We didn't actually stay here but ate in the bar. The Landlady is a Lancashire lass with a Yorkshire welcome. We had a lovely meal which was reasonably priced. The pub is traditional with a modern twist. We will be returning in the near future.

Stopped here overnight, was ok but found staff a bit nonchalant, the rooms cold and grubby and the yard at the back of the hotel totally covered in dog mess, we had to tiptoe through it all! The only saving grace was a good breakfast next morning served by a pleasant chef who chatted to us. Wouldn't choose to stop... More

The evening before arriving (three months after I booked) I read some damning reviews on TripAdvisor and was so alarmed that I - genuinely - considered cancelling. However initial impressions were encouraging - the room was large, the bed was clean and comfortable and the lad who greeted us was friendly and helpful. Certainly I feel some of the previous... We had read most of the reviews on trip advisor before booking The Castle Tavern. Although quite a few of the reviews were negative and the hotel was positioned 32 out of the 43 accommodations listed by trip advisor for Richmond but still had an unbelievable 4 out of 5 rating (I would like to see the formula). We were... More

On arrival, there was some mystery about whether we were booked in, and only agreed when we produced the booking.com printout. The so-called private shower room was not private at all, down a flight of public stairs and open to anyone. On finding that the kettle in the room was filthy, we said we were not prepared to stay there.... More
