We had most of our Marsden family staying here, staff were very good, rooms were nice and clean, buffet breakfast good. The hotel does need a bit of money spending on it, but still a nice old hotel building and could do with a gardener for regular upkeep.

This hotel is very reasonable and is located close to the centre of Ashby therefore in walking distance from numerous restaurants and bars. It is clean and tidy, the rooms are well-done and clean, but the hotel as a whole is somewhat drabby, it looks in need of some investment. The breakfast was ok, but as with all breakfasts kept... This hotel is very hard to review. As other people have stated the place is in serious need for some TLC and general renovation. The lobby looks fantastic and the building itself is impressive, but very quickly you'll notice peeling wallpaper, doors with broken locks and some older TV sets which are actually hard work to watch. Above all however... More

We stayed some time ago to attend a family get together. One of problems we face is trying to find a family room that provides a double bed and two single beds for the children. My two do not like sleeping on camp beds or pull out sofas, as they find them uncomfortable and end up with aching backs, so... More

Stayed here after deciding never to use the hotel again around 4 years ago, everywhere else was booked so decided to give it a go, big mistake. 4 years ago it badly needed updating and money spent on it, it seems like that never happened and the need to repair/ modernise now essential. There have been long term rumours that... More

The previous reviews I had read (after I had booked) were very accurate. I arrived late in the evening to find a bell on reception and the poor receptionist doubling up as the bar waitress. She was however very welcoming and courteous so full marks to the staff. When I got in the room it was stifling with the large... More

We stayed at the Royal despite being advised not to. Although the hotel needs an injection of cash as it is looking a bit tired, if you ask for one of the refurbished rooms, like we did, you'll be pleasantly surprised with a big room, the comfiest bed in any hotel anywhere in the UK, and a newly refitted bathroom.... Such a shame. This hotel used to be grand and the place to been seen. The building is beautiful, but the rooms are shabby and dated. The place would benefit from a major investment and needs to be brought up to date. Done of the rooms look recently refurbished, but these are only a handful out of many. It's really... More

This place isn't fit to house people. No heating at the beginning of May. Dated and poorly decorated rooms. Damp wallpaper hanging from the walls and mould in the bathrooms. Avoid this place if you can.

Freezing cold family room with damp wallpaper hanging from the walls. The radiator didn't work, so at 2 am and two heaters later, which also didn't work, we were shown to another (smaller) room. Also very dated but at least this was warm. The staff aren't interested and when I complained was quoted 'The owners are slowly renovating and it... More
