Read reviews first they weren't good but every where else was booked so staying for work so thought we'd give it a go. The room was terrible! We just ended up laughing! Carpet stained, television continually rolling ( it was late 80s circa ) when you walked in front of it the volume went down banged the front it went... More

I stayed here this weekend (8th November) for a function in the hotel. The night in general was fantastic with lovely bar staff. However, this cannot be said for the reception staff on arrival and checking out of the hotel, one of which was the head receptionist. Both women had a patronising attitude and I felt judged as soon as... More

The hotel rooms are quite dated and basic but otherwise clean. The main issue for us were the reception staff (namely the head receptionist). She didn't seem to understand how to check guests out and was rather rude and somewhat patronising to a few members of our party. This made our experience here unpleasant, which is a shame as the... I. Have stayed few times now...last was in september. The place lacks service from all sides... Vary our luggage up two floors by yourself is a big no-no but you don't have a choice as no concierge. Breakfast is dull, go for cornflakes! The room is old, windows are not wind proof. The breakfast room is nice and the main... More

Just an awful joke of a place. Where to start - staff who do not know how to check you in, a room with damp, rotted window frame, mould in the bathroom, a 1960's TV, a bed with a paper thin mattress and paint peeling off the walls. The food was diabolical! Bland, tasteless, and really small portions. To cap... More

I arrived rather late to be told there was no chance of me getting any food - not even a packet of crisps from the bar, which seemed to be open to me. The room was small and old fashioned, and the whole place had an air of indifference. The wide double staircase is an interesting architectural feature. I skipped... More

I think it would be fair to say the room I have is the worse I have experienced in a developed country! Unfortunately, I am unable to change rooms so I will get first hand experience of why the hotel is rated at the current trip advisor 41%. Some rooms have been refurbished, and are ok! It depends on the... More

Stayed overnight on spec as we were unexpectedly required to remain in East Midlands. This hotel was welcoming, with comfortable room and excellent breakfast. The elegant Regency (?) building has been largely preserved but the guest rooms have been modernised to meet current travel expectations - en suites with decent shower/bath. Public rooms have also been well decorated and furnished... More

We (family of 5) needed a nights stopover on the way to Alton Towers. At first i searched for a nearby Premier Inn, but found that the cost would be circa £150 for 2 rooms with breakfasts. Checked out late rooms and found The Royal at a bargain £99.00 all in, for 5 of us. As we came round the... More

Stayed for 2 nights while meeting relatives. Large clean room and ensuite. Service was good with a good breakfast. The selection for breakfast was not as extensive as as other hotels but it was great when linked to the price of the room.
