The previous reviews I had read (after I had booked) were very accurate. I arrived late in the evening to find a bell on reception and the poor receptionist doubling up as the bar waitress. She was however very welcoming and courteous so full marks to the staff. When I got in the room it was stifling with the large... More

We stayed at the Royal despite being advised not to. Although the hotel needs an injection of cash as it is looking a bit tired, if you ask for one of the refurbished rooms, like we did, you'll be pleasantly surprised with a big room, the comfiest bed in any hotel anywhere in the UK, and a newly refitted bathroom.... Such a shame. This hotel used to be grand and the place to been seen. The building is beautiful, but the rooms are shabby and dated. The place would benefit from a major investment and needs to be brought up to date. Done of the rooms look recently refurbished, but these are only a handful out of many. It's really... More

This place isn't fit to house people. No heating at the beginning of May. Dated and poorly decorated rooms. Damp wallpaper hanging from the walls and mould in the bathrooms. Avoid this place if you can.

Freezing cold family room with damp wallpaper hanging from the walls. The radiator didn't work, so at 2 am and two heaters later, which also didn't work, we were shown to another (smaller) room. Also very dated but at least this was warm. The staff aren't interested and when I complained was quoted 'The owners are slowly renovating and it... More

What was once a great hotel is now a hotel that has been in demise for a while. Looks like the current owners have a 'make do and mend' attitude. Carpets with duct tape to cover patches. Broken windows, tired furniture, no proper shower, just a hose from hot and cold tap, poor wifi which was not available in our... More

A tired looking Hotel which needs a huge revamp to get it up to a high standard. Some rooms have been upgraded but a lot more work needs to be done, the staff are brilliant, breakfast was very good, sadly the Hotel just scrapes in as a 3 star B/B. We were lucky to have had an upgraded room but... More

The room we were given for a 2 night stay was very shabby, dated with a hard, uncomfortable bed (similar to continental holiday accommodation). The architecture was stunning but peeling paintwork. Hotel was rather contradictory - cheap sausages but probably the best bacon I have had in a hotel! Staff were very friendly and probably keep the hotel going. Location... More

After first visit in 2014 which was bad revisited booking a rerfurbished room.Got that It is now B and B. Room was very good bearing in mind it is £60 (£50 plus vat) breakfast served in room with no extra charge. Would certainly have paid more for the night anyway.
