I have been staying at hotels on business for the last 14 years, and I have to stay this hotel is the worst I have stayed at. On my way to the bedroom after booking in I noticed that there was avery unpleasant smell emanating from the threadbare carpets. When I got to the room (room 11) it was obvious... More

Rooms a bit tired but on the whole not too bad for the price. The food was good at night in the bar and the free parking at the rear was a bonus. Some rooms are a lot better than others so beware!! Avoid the lower numbers.

Rooms are not what they look like on the website so don't be fooled this is there first con. in reality they are so outdated, dirty and worn.my seat was ripped, bathroom filthy, curtains hanging off, carpet not hoovered since winston Churchill was there. In all very poor for what your expecting.but the worst part had to be the cleaners if that's what they... More

We stayed at this hotel for one night, booking a three bedded family room. We booked this hotel because of the reasonable price £50 B&B for three so our expectations were not too high. The room was large but the decor was very tired and the whole place really needs a spruce up. there was a smell of damp throughout... More

First stay at The Bear. It's an old, quirky hotel. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Breakfast included in the price, it was good and set us up for the day. No lift but this is noted on their website. would definitely stay there again. Free parking, once you locate the car park. Helpful male receptionist gave us directions... More

We stayed at the Bear for three nights three rooms in total. One room had black tape holding the window together and was not serviced.Had to ask for new towels which were thrown on the bed.Bed wasn't made, tea and coffee not replenished and dirty cups left. In our room the housekeeper managed to service my room but didn't touch... More

Just back from a one night stay here, we turned up and surprised my in laws as they were there staying for a few days for their 54th wedding anniversary. I was dubious based on some poor reviews, however the food was superb and great variety and the breakfast inc in our rate of £50 was excellent...from taste through to... More

Firstly the ok points, these being that it was cheap, clean, mainly friendly staff (the young lad on reception was a bit dour), plenty free parking, free wifi with good coverage in room and good breakfast quality and choice. The negatives are that it is very run down and shabby and the evening food offering is uninspiring (below Wetherspoon standard... More

Even with the bad reviews ...it still serves it's purpose, as a sensibly priced hotel with 'beds to sleep in' and 'food to eat'. It may need updating but... it's supposed to be an 'Olde' English Inn therefore some of the furnishing must stay 'old' to retain the character of the place, surely? I stayed in a single room with... We arrived here in August expecting to stay for 5 nights whilst visiting the south coast, after staying one night we decided to leave. We asked to be moved to another hotel. which old english inns very quickly and efficiently sorted out for us. Like past reviews the hotel needs a complete overhaul, the carpets everywhere are threadbare especially on... More
