A very tired hotel, where the staff seem lacking in customer service skills. I was at breakfast 5 minutes before it officially opened (6.55 ) they wouldn't serve me anything at all and were more concerned with putting butter on the empty tables, even though I asked for coffee and toast. I had to leave due to an early morning... More

Booked room with 'booking.com' for 15/05/2013 on arrival was given keys to room 47, in general the room and furnishings were all good with a large flat screen tv but sadly when we went to shower the mechanism simply would not work. We complained to reception the following mornig and we were told that some rooms had showers that didn't... More

This an old coaching inn and as such is full of character. We paid £59 for a night here including breakfast and I certainly would not complain about our room, which had a large, comfy, modern bed and was a good size and warm. The carpet was showing its age and the furniture probably dated from the 50/60s. Everything was... More

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Bear Hotel the bank holiday weekend checking in on 3rd and checking out 6th May. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff at this property, particular members of staff to mention are Ryan, Zoe and another young guy who works in the Restaurant/Bar. All of them were extremely helpful, very... More

My husband and I booked a double room for 3 nights on May 1st. We had an excellent stay. The room was very clean, not huge but plenty big enough for us. The staff, especially Ryan, were very polite and helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was superb and if you walked away from breakfast... More

Okay, if it's a luxurious Boutique hotel break you're after then the Bear really shouldn't enter into your deliberations. If it's a crash pad for you to return to after a day out and about then it's fine. We booked a night for somewhere to kip which wouldn't cost the earth and was relatively convenient. We had a family room... More

I find the Bear Hotel excellent for a stop over for the ferry to Spain from Portsmouth. As we have two dogs our most important benefit of the hotel is that it is dog friendly. The room was a good size and was clean and the bed was comfortable, free wi-fi in the room was welcome as well. As has... More

I've stayed here twice, once after a works do and once for a little break. We came back because it was such good value for money, we booked using late rooms. com. The bed was comfy, rooms we had were a good size and both were very clean! I didn't take advantage of the breakfast or dinner unfortunately!

My two brothers and i stayed at the Bear hotel recently and we were happy with the accommodation. The beds were very comfortable and we had an en suite bathroom. The only negative thing i could mention was that the toilet cistern had come away from the wall and wobbled when the toilet was used. The staff were very pleasant and helpful especially... This is an old hotel but it is friendly and the room was really a very good size and the en-suite also had plenty of space and unusually a bath so it was comfortable, but the highlight was the breakfast. They ddid themselves proud and afterwards we turned to each other and said, 'I don't think that I'll be having... More
