Basic bit staff very friendly, bedroom clean and value for money. We really had a lovely stay. In the town so had a walk around Bar a bit too busy but nice people and for £55 what can you expect. Breakfast good. All in all good value for money. Near Jane Austen house which is a bonus.

I stayed for 1 night on business. The staff were friendly and helpful. Service was good. The room was quiet, spacious and clean. Comfy and well equipped. However I didn't find the rest of the hotel very clean. The ladies toilets near the bar were in a poor state and at breakfast I could see that the carpet hadn't been... More

We had our civil partnership here. The staff were brilliant, really friendly and helpful and couldn't have done more to make the day special. Value for money was excellent too. Some of our plans simply didn't work in practice due to the number of people there, but the staff just got on with 'executive decisions' and really did save a... More

We had booked this hotel a while ago as part of a group attending my son's wedding in Selborne. After reading some of the recent disappointing comments we began to wonder what we had let ourselves in for but our experience was nothing like the previous reviews. Check-in was quick and efficient and our room was comfortable with small touches,... More

To say I am hugely disappointed with this hotel is an understatement. There are so many parallels that can be drawn with Fawlty Towers and the Swan Hotel in Alton. I had booked a suite as a Birthday treat for my other half. This was one of many Old English Inns that he wanted to visit, having been to quite... More

We were sent an email with a good deal, £51.80 for 2 nights b & b so we booked. On arrival we were greeted by Toby who was very helpful. When we told him that our bathroom light wasn't working he arrived minutes later to replace the bulb. When I asked for more decaf coffee he produced some within minutes.... More

Booked here for a birthday weekend.... It was an experience to say the least. Check in was was enough although the carpark was very busy (Friday afternoon). Had a suite room, which has a very basic bathroom (not even a heated towel rail) and as it was the suite room I would have expected mineral water along with the tea... More

Having wanted to go out for lunch with my wife and son we decided that we would go to the Swan. We were sceptical due to having poor experience previously. Having waited 20 minutes since ordering ( 2 sandwiches and a kids fish fingers- so nothing to taxing) we enquired of the whereabouts of the food, only to be told... More

Had dinner here a few days ago, and my steak which was meant to be well-done came out bleeding. It was taken back and another one was delivered - when all my friends had finished theirs! And it was tough. Have eaten here many times in the past and sadly won't be again after this. The waitress was apologetic, but... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Swan Hotel Alton near Farnham and Basingstoke, is located in the Hampshire town of Alton with easy access via the A31 making it an ideal base if visiting Farnham, Aldershot, Winchester, Basingstoke. The Swan Hotel dates back to the 16th century and was a main stage on the old London-Southampton coaching route, and the Swan Hotel has been catering handsomely to passing traffic since the 16th century. Tradition has it that the poet Edmund Spenser, Sir Francis Drake, Queen Elizabeth I and the Earl of Essex all broke their journeys here. Another famous guest was Lord Nelson. Our guests include many people of sense and sensibility - that is to say, devotees of Jane Austen, who make their pilgrimage to her cottage in the Chawton, where Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice, were both written, during their stay with us. The cottage now is a popular tourist attraction and museum dedicated to Jane's life and work. Today the Swan Hotel is popular with locals and travellers alike and along with the new refurbishment is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area. ... more   less
