Very welcoming and helpful on checking in. Hotel clean and comfortable. Quiet at night, despite room overlooking high street. Good food and wine at reasonable price. All in all, with the spring offer it was excellent value for money.

Visiting Family in the area over the Bank Holiday week end, we decided to try the Swan for Sunday Lunch. We booked a table for 5 in advance, for 1.30 and on arrival had to search around to find someone to direct us to our table. A woman, who I assumed to be a manageress, pushed rudely past our party... We use this hotel frequently for work and the rooms are generally very good. They are large, well furnished and because it is an old building there is some real character. But, sadly the food lets the whole experience down. The kitchen struggles to cope with parties greater than 4 and the food is of only reasonable quality and usually... More

I am pleased that you like the hotel but I am disappointed that your experience with the food hasn't been great. I will pass your comments to the chefs who will ensure you have a positive experience on your next visit." More

My wife and I stayed here for one night with our small dog. We were given a nicely refurbished room with comfortable beds and although the view from our window was limited to say the least, we did not mind as we had been given a room which the hotel had earmarked for dogs! We all had a comfortable night.... More

Stayed for two nights in December, stayed in room 5 or 6 on top floor and had loads of room and although the bathroom was slightly dated it was a very nice room. For what we paid it was unbelievable value. The restaurant at night was excellent and breakfast was o.k in the mornings. All the staff could not have... More

Stayed for a couple of nights in March for my birthday and had booked a Superior room. We were allocated the Jane Austen room which was fairly large and had a 4-poster bed plus a bay window looking out over the High St. Despite being there for a Saturday morning it was still quiet as one way traffic and not... Stayed at the swan for a few days over Christmas. The overall experience was lovely and the staff were very polite and accommodating. The food in the restaurant was also extremely lovely and despite coming down two minutes before the breakfast menu closed they still went out of their way to provide for us. I would recommend this hotel to... More

Stayed one Saturday night. Overall it was good but left with the impression there wasn't enough staff. Double room good size and clean but the ensuite was a bit cramped especially with a huge sink in it. Ate in the restaurant and initially tried to book by phone but no answer, then went down and told that only a table... More

Stayed at The Swan for 1 night in a party of 6 people and booked into the restaurant for an evening meal. I've stayed twice now at The Swan on a good value Sunday evening B&B deal, both times arriving by train. Its a short taxi ride from the station but there is a large car park at the back for those coming by car. I did try to confirm the second stay using my mobile on the train journey but was... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Swan Hotel Alton near Farnham and Basingstoke, is located in the Hampshire town of Alton with easy access via the A31 making it an ideal base if visiting Farnham, Aldershot, Winchester, Basingstoke. The Swan Hotel dates back to the 16th century and was a main stage on the old London-Southampton coaching route, and the Swan Hotel has been catering handsomely to passing traffic since the 16th century. Tradition has it that the poet Edmund Spenser, Sir Francis Drake, Queen Elizabeth I and the Earl of Essex all broke their journeys here. Another famous guest was Lord Nelson. Our guests include many people of sense and sensibility - that is to say, devotees of Jane Austen, who make their pilgrimage to her cottage in the Chawton, where Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice, were both written, during their stay with us. The cottage now is a popular tourist attraction and museum dedicated to Jane's life and work. Today the Swan Hotel is popular with locals and travellers alike and along with the new refurbishment is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area. ... more   less
