I ate here on Saturday night with four friends who were visiting from Ireland. The food was awful and the service even worse!! We ordered five fillet steaks either medium or medium to rare. All five were shockingly undercooked. I asked for my steak to be cooked as medium but received a blue steak. My friend swapped steaks with me... More

We went for a birthday dinner on a Monday night. It's local and we hadn't been before. We would have gone over the road to Square 1 on Dunmow high street which is always excellent but they only have a set menu on a Monday with little option for vegetarians. From the outside the Saracen's Head looks pretty swish and... More

Centrally located in the small town, this busy small hotel is welcoming and comfortable - a short drive from London Stanstead Airport. Have had recent knee surgery I was surprised and delighted to be upgraded to a ground floor "suite" in the old stable block. This made things a lot more comfortable & was appreciated. Small details spoil this hotel... More

Upon entering reception I was greeted by a young lady, (same as whom I spoke to on the phone I believe, Olivia?) distracted and disinterested would be an understatement, throw a key at me and point to a room I've never been too. Back to your conversation with you friend. Not good. Staff in General seemed friendly, greeted by a... More

We recently visited The Saracens Head for lunch on our way to Thaxted to visit friends. We opted to eat in the bar, however the lunch menu was extremely limited & we thought rather overpriced. However, we were hungry so decided to stay. We ordered sandwiches - the brown bread was nice but the white was either stale or that... More

One roast lamb and one roast beef which were large helpings .pleasant service and delicious desserts - cherry cheese cake, sticky toffee pud and ice cream selection. Their Christmas... More

Seems fine from the outside but...accommodation is very average - better choose an upstairs room away from the bar otherwise you may be disturbed by noise and cigarette smoke. Breakfast not great although the menu would want to give a better impression - it was sadly disappointing: Lack of choice, basic quality (no special milk- cereals loose in open bowl... More

My partner and I recently stayed here as we had a wedding close by. I thought it looked a nice place to stay after looking at their website. From the outside it looks really nice and the bar and restaurant area are really well maintained and furnished. The rooms however let this place down. Firstly the pictures on the website... More

My wife and I decided to stop off here for lunch whilst visiting friends. It was a bank holiday Monday and lunch time. We decided to sit in the bar area rather than the restaurant but there was space in both. Service was good. The food was delivered promptly and our orders were correct. My wife had a chicken dish... Great if you are just stopping off. Really helpful to wedding parties. The room was well decorated with a touch of Essex bling. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, especially when I left the key in the room! Breakfast included was good, but veggie sausages not available.
