Only stay in this hotel if you have a sense of humour.... I was greeted by the owner, Claudio, who had clearly been enjoying the produce from the bar... Having finally checked in, I was informed that the Chef was ill and that dinner would be limited to pizza or ciabatta... The next day, on returning from a day's seminar,... More

Dear Sir / Mme Please first except your apologies for the Kitchen not being open in the evening. We are currently in the process of employing a new Chef for our establishment and are re-directing customers to local establishments for supper if they require something other than our reduced menu for the time being. Secondly I would like to say... More

Stayed for one night, in room 32 which is in the "newer" part of the hotel. It is clean but It's very tired, bathrooms need gutting and refurbishment, furniture is tired and electric lamps etc are 70's and broken. It's part of a noisy pub with customers who like to stand in the car park outside the rooms for a... More

We are gradually updating every room and they have been freshly redecorated . We are upgrading the bathrooms gradually. Nice ambiance in and outside of the bar situated in a lovely village 30 minutes from Gatwick. The bedrooms and bathrooms require updating but a comfortable stay and as the bedrooms are situated downstairs at the back of the pub it was lovely and quiet. Breakfast could have been better but quite sufficient considering the price. Would stay here again... More

We stayed here after a friend's wedding and it was a nice place. Super helpful staff too. I called to explain why we hadn't checked and they were super accommodating. Nice, clean rooms and a comfortable, if a bit soft, bed. Breakfast would've been better if there had been more choice of hot food but for the price you really... More

This is cheap and you absolutely get what you pay for. The rooms are grotty and the bedding grim. The TV and toilet both didn't work. Upon arrival the owner informs you with some satisfaction that his staff are lazy and they don't do refunds. So deal with it. Breakfast is a packet of biscuits, toast and minimal cereal options.... We booked this hotel for one night as it seemed ideally located within the Ashdown Forest Area. On arrival, the front of the building looks quaint and inviting. As soon as we entered the room we noticed that there was no rubbish bin, no milk for tea-making ( although there was an empty cigarrette lighter in a caddy!), no wardrobe... More

The thing that amazes me about the Chequers is that there have been bad reviews on this site for well over five years but nothing has been done about the amateur service, the state of the rooms, the stupid prices or the food/bar stock. We regularly have friends stay in the village and I have to ask them to avoid... More

Upon arriving and checking in the first thought was good value and what had other reviewers complained about, its a 2 star hotel for £65 a night not the Dorchester for £265 a night and to be fair , you get what you pay for, the room was clean , decent bed with fresh linen........so far so good. The bar... More

We visited this place today for a bar lunch - we were told there were no ciabattas and the only other option was a plough mans platter for £8.00. Our party of four all ordered these plates. When they arrived we were all staggered by what was presented. There was one slither of cheddar, one of Stilton, four pieces of... More
