The menu looked great but the execution did not live up to expectations. Maybe the chef had a bad day because all 3 people who had the chips found them dry and chewy. They must have been re-heated from the day before. Also the peas were white, the ham was grey and wafer thin, we had stale bread and stale... More

We had our dinner here after a stroll along the beach & ended our day very well. Typical wholesome hearty pub food which was very nice indeed. Beer garden very sweet with a big old boat towards one corner which added well to the ambiance. Staff very good & helpful. Would certainly recommend.

Just returned from a family weekend break (with dog) and had a really lovely stay. The inn is well located (if you're after a very quiet break by the sea that is!) and the staff are very attentive. We booked a family room which was at the top of the inn and consisted of two large bedrooms, a shared bathroom,... More

Yes, if you are looking for a totally peaceful night's sleep in a comfortable bed and a spotless room with gleaming ensuite, then look no further. We have just spent 4 nights here - our first overnight stay in Dunwich - and were not disappointed. The Ship is in a delightful location, a stone's throw from fabulous beach and cliff... More

Just back from our honeymoon here, only a short break but we would have loved to have stayed longer. We booked a Marsh View room and indeed, the view was beautiful. The room was lovely too with old, characterful furniture, a comfortable bed and a very smart en suite shower room. I loved the little touches like the pebbles on... More

We took advantage of an excellent mid week offer which was remarkable value for a double room, breakfast and £35 towards dinner. The food was simple but well cooked and many of the ingredients locally sourced. Our room was simple but clean and quiet. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The Ship is a perfect location for walking the Suffolk... More

Loved the breakfast and evening meals enjoyed the peace and relaxed atmosphere whilst on our short stay last week :) the beach is a minute away which is good for slow evening walks with several opportunities to see a wide range of birds in the marshes next to the beach.

Have visited twice this month, and both times have had fantastic food and a great atmosphere. Second visit was with family visiting from France and my Dad said it was the best steak he'd had in a long time. My Norfolk chicken was moist and they were happy to swop salad for mixed veg. I was impressed to get samphire.... More

My 2 year old son loved running about and playing in the rickshaw van in the garden (not sure if that's a permanent feature...) .The garden was the highlight for me, there is a wonderful gnarled old fig tree and a variety of other fruit trees dotted about. We ate under the shade of an apple tree on a beautiful... More

Have just come back from another lovely weekend at The Ship. Such a relaxing atmosphere, lovely food, really welcoming staff. We've stayed here about half a dozen times now, and this definitely won't be the last.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship Inn isn't just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all – we like to think it's also part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village surrounded by nature reserves, heathland and beach, only the romantic ruins of Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port claimed by the waves during a terrible storm. It's said you can still hear the peal of the church bells beneath the waves. While we can't guarantee that, there are certain, more earthly things we're always happy to provide… real ales, real food and a real fire. You will find: a great pub, home-cooked food in our restaurant, a cosy hotel with comfortable, traditionally furnished bedrooms, some with views across the sea or marshes. There is also an enormous garden dotted with fruit trees (including our 300 year old fig tree) and a beach that really is just a couple of minutes walk away. Whether you want to use it as a base to explore this wild and wonderful coastline, enjoy some of the best fish and chips on the Suffolk coast or simply indulge in a pint or two of Adnams, The Ship Inn at Dunwich extends the warmest of welcomes. ... more   less
