The Ship at Dunwich is in the middle of the village, just a couple of hundred metres from the beach. It's more of a pub / restaurant with rooms - there's no reception area, and nowhere much to sit during the day, apart from in the (well frequented bar). There's a good sized garden at the back with tables, and... More

We stayed for one night over the ( very wet) August Bank Holiday. The Ship is a lovely pub that when we were there did a roaring trade at lunchtime but was quieter in the evenings. The room was comfortable and well presented. Breakfast was excellent with a wide choice of cooked options. We also had lunch and dinner in... More

The Ship Inn at Dunwich is such a lovely building and fabulous location, We had booked a weekend with very close friends and their daughter and were all so looking forward to it. Our friends had booked for us all, but we have two very active and boisterous Parson Jack Russell's, and decided that we would call the hotel and... More

I booked two rooms for myself, my wife and daughter on the 7th July for the Friday 29th August for two nights. I requested a king size bed and was told that there would be a king size bed. A week before our arrival I called to check that all was well and was told that it was not a... More

We booked this pub at very short notice, just to get away for a couple of nights. All staff very freindly and nothing too much trouble. Added bounus it was dog friendly (we don't have one) but they were all so well behaved and helped to break the ice with other guests. Breakfasts filled us both up for the whole... More

We found the Ship to be a nice enough place to stay, but came away thinking it was overpriced. For what we'd paid per night for a room (and from the photos on the website), we'd expected a 'boutique style' pub with a really good restaurant, but although our room was clean, comfortable and more than adequate, our stay wasn't... Just stayed at The Ship for 2 nights, lovely location, right by a beach and lots walking options good food, decent rooms at reasonable rates but best of all a hotel that really welcomes people travelling with dogs. Most places we've been that claim to be dog friendly are at best dog-tolerant, The Ship really does make you and your... More

Wonderful place. We stayed here for the weekend with friends in a family room (Blackfriars). Very friendly and accommodating staff. Great garden for the kids to play in. Food was gorgeous in the restaurant. Great choice of wines and beers. The hotel is right near the beach. My only criticism would be the room we had had very low ceilings... More

My partner and I had breakfast at the Ship yesterday. Having been badly let down by another local hotel on the night of a friends wedding, and being unable to find another room elsewhere we decided to go somewhere nice for breakfast the following morning to lick our wounds. The breakfast at the Ship was delicious, plenty of cereals, fruit... More

Just a few salient points: Tiny bedroom Terrible shower - the worst I have ever had. From freezing to scalding, no pressure to speak of, no shower screen. Really poor. Setting was great and the food was good. Fish and chips highly recommended.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship Inn isn't just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all – we like to think it's also part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village surrounded by nature reserves, heathland and beach, only the romantic ruins of Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port claimed by the waves during a terrible storm. It's said you can still hear the peal of the church bells beneath the waves. While we can't guarantee that, there are certain, more earthly things we're always happy to provide… real ales, real food and a real fire. You will find: a great pub, home-cooked food in our restaurant, a cosy hotel with comfortable, traditionally furnished bedrooms, some with views across the sea or marshes. There is also an enormous garden dotted with fruit trees (including our 300 year old fig tree) and a beach that really is just a couple of minutes walk away. Whether you want to use it as a base to explore this wild and wonderful coastline, enjoy some of the best fish and chips on the Suffolk coast or simply indulge in a pint or two of Adnams, The Ship Inn at Dunwich extends the warmest of welcomes. ... more   less
