Wonderful place. We stayed here for the weekend with friends in a family room (Blackfriars). Very friendly and accommodating staff. Great garden for the kids to play in. Food was gorgeous in the restaurant. Great choice of wines and beers. The hotel is right near the beach. My only criticism would be the room we had had very low ceilings... More

My partner and I had breakfast at the Ship yesterday. Having been badly let down by another local hotel on the night of a friends wedding, and being unable to find another room elsewhere we decided to go somewhere nice for breakfast the following morning to lick our wounds. The breakfast at the Ship was delicious, plenty of cereals, fruit... More

Just a few salient points: Tiny bedroom Terrible shower - the worst I have ever had. From freezing to scalding, no pressure to speak of, no shower screen. Really poor. Setting was great and the food was good. Fish and chips highly recommended.

My husband took me to The Ship for lunch on my birthday at the end of July. After a dip in the sea which is just a short walk away, we had wonderful fish and chips sitting under a pear tree in the garden. The staff were very helpful, polite and friendly, the service very good and we were able... More

We stayed August 9th and liked it so much we added an impromptu extra night. It was a random discovery via the internet, and “dog friendly” was high on our list. Mostly couples, many with dogs, a few young families, and us as one gay couple. It's really lovely and charming – don't hesitate to stay here. So we sampled... More

The location of the pub is perfect. A very short stroll to the beach, and overlooking the marshes at the front. The garden is charming and a nice place to have one of the delicious beers on offer. The food is rather good. Our main course at dinner of local Sole and brown shrimp was delicious. The view from our... More

We ate here twice this week and were very impressed. The pub has different areas and depending on wether you are looking for a relaxed garden for family, traditional cosy bar, or more formal dining rooms the Ship will cater. We had the sausage and mash, pork, and fish and chips - all were excellent. We would like to see... More

Such a shame! The Ship promises so much but the food and service lets it down! Wonderful little place, well known ,good reputation but very disappointing! The food very ordinary and the service poor. 4 of us on a Saturday in August expecting so much but sadly not good. The order taken incorrectly and one meal arrives before the others.... More

Have stayed many times and on each occasion had great friendly service, the rooms are always charming. Breakfast and dinner are always a real treat. So much to do in the area with wonderful Minsmere on the door step. The front rooms have wonderful views over the marshes.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship Inn isn't just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all – we like to think it's also part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village surrounded by nature reserves, heathland and beach, only the romantic ruins of Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port claimed by the waves during a terrible storm. It's said you can still hear the peal of the church bells beneath the waves. While we can't guarantee that, there are certain, more earthly things we're always happy to provide… real ales, real food and a real fire. You will find: a great pub, home-cooked food in our restaurant, a cosy hotel with comfortable, traditionally furnished bedrooms, some with views across the sea or marshes. There is also an enormous garden dotted with fruit trees (including our 300 year old fig tree) and a beach that really is just a couple of minutes walk away. Whether you want to use it as a base to explore this wild and wonderful coastline, enjoy some of the best fish and chips on the Suffolk coast or simply indulge in a pint or two of Adnams, The Ship Inn at Dunwich extends the warmest of welcomes. ... more   less
