Initial impressions of the hotel aren't very favourable - it is a rather forbidding red brick Victorian (?) building, and the area around the small car park could be tidier.
Inside, it is much better. The dining area was well presented, and our room along with others has very recently been refurbished. We understand that the remaining rooms are to be improved at the end of the season. Some finishing touches are required: somewhere to put the soap by the wash basin and in the shower, and a seat in the room (one was provided very quickly on request).
We dined at the hotel each night: pre-booking is recommended. The food was well prepared, but chosen from a rather limited menu. A pint of ale that was not to my satisfaction was quickly and courteously replaced. Breakfast was great.
The best thing, though, was the hard work that the staff put in to make us welcome. They were pleasant, informal and helpful throughout.
