what a cracking place. this is an old world bed and breakfast full of charm and character. the biggest and best character being the host, who was freindly, chatty and most welcoming. he told me that storing my bike was no problem and had me bring it in the house so it was safe. the room was clean and the... Barry is a good host and very friendly and helpful. The house is lovely, it's full of treasures and my bed was very comfortable. It is a little strange not to be given a front door key but we had no problems. Enjoyed meeting the cat (don't let him out!) and chatting with Barry. Not all rooms are en-suite -... More

I booked months ago as part of birthday pressie for my partner, a day at the races with an over night stay. I couldn't have booked a better place, full of character and very friendly and that's just Barry! A lovely period house reflecting Barry and his life in the antiques world. The bedroom was spacious and had all the... More

Quirky is the keyword here. Barry is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. He is very helpful with his knowledge of the local area. This was our 2nd visit as we are racegoers to Thirsk racecourse so it is really located well for visitors to the race course or just for staying around Thirsk. Location is just... More

Barry, the owner, is very welcoming and full of information. On arrival you feel like you are being welcomed into his home. We had a very comfortable room, extremely clean and spacious. Breakfast was exactly to order, timely and delicious. We were only there for one night en route to somewhere else but we had a very enjoyable stopover. Would... More

Lovely spotlessly clean, unusual accommodation. Barry and the two Joannes give you a great welcome and Barry is a mine of information on places to visit. The beds are very comfy and the breakfast is delicious all made to your specific requirements and at the time you request. Would definitely stay again

My mother and I stayed 1 night as a stop over on the way to Scotland. We did not make a prior booking, however Barry was very welcoming and suggested a great pub (can't remember the name) to go for dinner. We had an amazing dinner, one of our best experiences in the UK. Barry made us very welcome and... More

St. James House is an ancient building with an interesting history filled with the owners collection of antiques. Barry, the owner, is very talkative and was able to give us lots of information on the house and the surrounding area. The rooms are old fashioned, patterned carpets, coloured bathroom suite but everything is clean and very comfortable.
