Visited for lunch on a Saturday. The dish was unremarkable and rather small, with no trimmings. Although the environment is nice and the place is quite quiet and staff polite and helpful I did not think this was good value. more

Staff straight out of school totally untrained and with no management in site. Can’t deal with a request for toast. Food barely warm. The noisiest hotel I’ve stayed in. Some noise from outside but most from staff. An air conditioning fan with a collapsed bearing howling from 6 AM. Don’t bother. If they rely on repeat business they’ll soon go... more

I enjoyed staying at the lion hotel and would recommend it in general. My sense of the place is that there are new owners or a new manager that are trying to improve the place. So the bedding and details in the rooms were very nice but the furniture was pretty old fashioned underneath. I really liked all the welcoming... more

We paid extra for a upgarded room but you'd be hard pressed to tell - a stereo with 1 speaker?! The room was tired and in need of attention. The staff were welcoming and friendly. But I wouldn't want to stay again sandwiched between the A6 and a petrol station. more

A small group of us ate at this hotel on the night before a wedding - big mistake (the hotel, not the wedding). Only half got what they ordered, the food was so unappealing we guessed the cook was as disinterested as the waitress. Example: the Peach Melba was just some tinned peach slices in a bowl. more

We stayed for 2 nights at this hotel combining a family party and a long weekend in the area. The hotel was conveniently located for visits into the dales and for a vist to Chatsworth House.Chatsworth was approx a 40 minute drive,we thoroughly enjoyed our day there, the house being seeped in history and the guides very friendly and knowledgeable. The garden... more

We stayed at this hotel in March. The place was over priced for what is effectively a 1 to 2 * hotel at most. They are trying to be of a higher class but are just not up to the mark. Breakfast was appalling with 'powdered egg' for scrambled and tinned mushrooms, cheap sausages etc. How much bother is it... more

Due to unplanned events we ended up in Belper one late evening with no where to stay. We found The Lion Hotel 'by accident' driving through Belper and although we were a family of four, with no reservations and there were no family rooms available, they quickly found a solution and our night was saved. We had both dinner and... more

I booked this hotel for a business trip. I got a really good rate on their 'early bird' deal and it was a good location. I was a little nervous as the price was so good but I was really pleasantly surprised. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful and check-in was very quick and painless. My room was not... more

We stayed here for 2 nights when attending a friend's wedding. The hotel was ok-ish, but could have been so much better with a few changes. Good points: - good sized room, quiet, overlooking the rear - good location, near to the centre of town - mainly friendly staff (apart from 1 grumpy old man!) - generous breakfast - easy... more
