The most important part of this search is the food; and in that area this venue offers a very good Sunday lunch. Good roast potatoes, good vegetables, and the delightful offering of Beef at 3 levels, rare, medium and well done. Yorkshire pudding not so good. I will definitely revisit. Could this be the one ? My transaction with the... More

Short overnight stay en route to Yorkshire. Booked a week in advance - easy as even though all previous accommodations tried were fully booked (Thursday night - no room at the inn). Arrived just after 8pm, warm welcome, room adequate and well presented. Good price - would visit again.

My walking buddy and I stopped here for a second time today after a fine walk along The Portway near Belper. Choice of a large garden with fine views or lots of quaint little cool dark rooms inside. Good imaginative menu, food promptly served and of good portions. More expensive than many pub lunches but good value. Good range of... More

We stayed in one of the self catering cottages over the weekend. The bed was comfortable and the location quiet. However, the kitchen facilities were very limited -there was only one mug between three people - and there is no wardrobe. The extra bed is an air mattress. Breakfast was average. Overall I felt the price of £115 per night... More

The bar/restaurant area was like the antiques roadshow...a strange and facinating collection. Room was adequate but could have done with a bit of updating, the shower room was good. Great location in the middle of nowhere but the sat nav was defeated so relied on a friendly local. Maybe some signage at the nearest crossroads perhaps?

Choice of Beef (rare, med or well done), turkey, lamb, pork with plenty of vegetable, boiled, mashed and roasted potatoes and yorkshire pud. Excellent quality, piping hot and plenty of meat given (sometimes carvery's aren't that generous with their portions). Beautiful view. Two vegetarian options (brie, cranberry, hazlenut and mushroom wellington and squash and beetroot fritter). My husband wasn't hungry... More

Costs twice as much as some chain restaurant carveries but is 5 times better. Best selection of beautiful roasts including rare, medium and well done beef. Chef serving meat is friendly and rightly proud of the product. Good slices of the meat without the conscious assessing of portion control you find elsewhere. Have been a number of times over the years.... More

We come here several times a year with family. The carvery is very good although on this visit the roast potatoes weren't up to their usual standard. Desserts are generous and a good choice. Sunday lunch is carvery only but if you visit at any other time their menu offers a great selection.

We made a late decision to visit the Peak District over the Bank Holiday and found every hotel we tried either too expensive or full. We eventually found the Bear. It was a little further away from where we wanted to stay but it looked ok. The stay as a whole was mixed. We did enjoy our stay but with... More

Met family for Sunday lunch. Very limited choice of starter and desserts to start with. The service was poor, one young waitress walked off mid order! The carvery choice was lovely, meat of good quality however, all the veggies in our group (who only shared the veggie option in common) suffered "consequences" the day following the meal. Worrying. Desserts were... More
