Thought the environment was lovely, you can eat in the bar area or more formally in the restaurant. Chose to eat in the bar as had two young children, which was lovely and relaxing with log burner. Menu was reasonably priced, ranged from about £8.00 to £14.00. Kids food was around £4.00 (pizza, sausage, fish fingers etc). Food was of... More

We arrived wet and tired but the manager / receptionist was extremely helpful. He ensured we were fed before the kitchen closed and the meal was of a very high standard. We were impressed with the quality of the room and it was large and modern. I never stop at Shap but if I ever do I would definitely return... More

Stopped by returning home from Lowther Show 9th Aug for dinner. Friendly staff, good service, very clean and great food. Nice bar and spacious dinning area inside and outside. Will definitely call in again on our days out in this area. Nice one guys!

First off, parking for a large van was no problem. Staff on arrival were very helpful, cider, beer, food and service were excellent, room was fine too. I am back next week for another night and am looking forward to great service, good beer and food and a comfortable nights sleep Nice work guys, Simon

For what charges a very high price (£100) for what it is, we paid extra for a deluxe room but all we got was substandard. Not good value compared to other hotels we have recently stayed at in the Lake District. It is a pub with rooms and restaurant rather than a £100 a night hotel. There is no reception... More

Shap. We have always had a preconceived conception of a remote, boring nowhere with nothing ever happening. Goodness me how wrong we were. The intention on arrival was to have a quick pint on a hot day after a long walk around Wet Sleddale. Upon arrival we were greeted by wonderfully hospitable staff who were so accommodating to our needs.... More

Stayed for one night whilst doing C2C. Particular comments are: 1. Be prepared for quite a walk after you finish on path for the day as The Greyhound is at end of High Street. Consequently in good location to get back on route in the morning. Shap itself is a place of rural decline and not particularly pleasant. 2. The... More

We called here for a meal after spending the day sightseeing, the staff were very helpful, the food freshly made to order, . I had the Lamb Henry, it was delicious, the deserts were home made, a real find after a long day..

This very well run Coaching Hotel offers a huge welcome on arrival through the famous revolving doors with a fire glowing in the bar and the rain hammering against the windows. And this is July! My pal and I + Bella the labrador were taken to our room by a very efficient young man, a nice room with a good... More

We ate here after a very wet and windy day walking up Kidsty pike and getting married on our coast to coast adventure. The food was excellent! Very large portions and very tasty! And a special thanks goes to James the barman who was especially welcoming!

Tranquil haven set in the beautiful location of Shap only minutes away from Junction 39 on M6. This fabulous hostelry dates back hundreds of years and being situated on the old A6, was the main road from London to Scotland. Travellers would take their rest for themselves and their horses. Fabulous food served all day, 7 days a week. Also makes a great alternative to the service stations on the motorway. Situated on the famous coast to coast walking route so also a great resting place for walkers. Well behaved pets also welcome, but not permitted in the restaurant. FREE WI FI, Award Wining Real Ales and a great selection of wines. A warm welcome awaits. ... more   less
