We stayed for a night on the Coast to Coast walk, and would gladly have stayed for another night, had we not needed to get underway to Kirkby Stephen. This was one of our best stops so far: the room was spacious and comfortable, the food in the restaurant hearty and well-flavoured, the service first class, and the prices very... More

we have stopped here twice now on the way to Scotland - it is very near jct 39 on the M6 north and better than a services. Not that hungry so we had 2 starters which were the size of meals in some other places - super dish of black pudding, bacon and apple, and garlic mushrooms on toast -... More

We are a party of five friends who are walking the Coast to Coast route and we stayed overnight in Shap. The Greyhound Hotel, a former coaching inn dating from 1703 was recommended by our host at our B & B and we were not disappointed. There was ample choice on the menu of locally sourced products - all reasonably priced-... More

We enjoyed an evening meal here during C2C after a very long and hard day. Good menu choice, well prepared food, excellent staff. There is a warmth about this place that us most welcoming. Would recommend.

Chose this pub after Harter Fell walk as available at short notice. Was a little underwhelmed when I arrived and saw the railway line at back but and tired car park but after a bath this soon changed and have to compliment the staff the most professional and courteous I think I have met in a hotel, good food, lovely... The bed was big and it was clean. The staff were polite and helpful. That's it nothing else positive to say really. The bathroom was minute and the breakfast was dreadful. This is the worst breakfast I've had to date on the Coast 2 Coast. Speaking of which the place is at the far end of the town and way... More

Stayed for an overnight on the coast to coast. Hotel and rooms clean although bathroom very small. Staff very pleasant and the food was nice. However the packed lunch is a rip off ! £7.50 gets you a sandwich, a chocolate bar, a packet of crisps and a children's bottle of fruit shoot ! My advice is go to the... More

Very sorry to hear this. This must have been the first time this has happened. I will look in to this and enquire how this has happened. I can assure you this has been an oversight and has not been intentional. If you wish to call the hotel we are very happy to refund the difference. My apologies once again. More

We stayed for 2 nights at the Greyhound Hotel, found the room to be clean and comfortable but bathroom a bit on the small side, Staff were friendly and helpful, location in easy reach of Penrith Kendal and the motorway, cold breakfast fine but cooked breakfast was a great disappointment ie scrabbled eggs and omelettes had hard bits in them... Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Tranquil haven set in the beautiful location of Shap only minutes away from Junction 39 on M6. This fabulous hostelry dates back hundreds of years and being situated on the old A6, was the main road from London to Scotland. Travellers would take their rest for themselves and their horses. Fabulous food served all day, 7 days a week. Also makes a great alternative to the service stations on the motorway. Situated on the famous coast to coast walking route so also a great resting place for walkers. Well behaved pets also welcome, but not permitted in the restaurant. FREE WI FI, Award Wining Real Ales and a great selection of wines. A warm welcome awaits. ... more   less
