Absolutely wonderful stay in one of the most beautiful houses I've ever been to. Alot of the original features are still intact which is very charming. All of the rooms have bath tubs which is a welcome surprise at the end of a long days walk. Breakfast was great.

Stayed here on C2C. After a 20 mile walk we were exhausted and so pleased to find warm welcoming rooms with lovely baths. The house is gorgeous, although the bed was on a bit of a tilt due to the uneven floors but a small price to pay for such a wonderful room. We had to walk a mile to... More

That Shap is not a really charming town is quite well known but The Hermitage makes up for it. Situated in an old grand house this B&B is something special. Amazing old fashioned decor and large rooms and bathrooms with wooden floors give it a special vibe. The cooked breakfast was really excellent!

This is an organised and beautiful home in Shap. The owner/operator is rightly proud of her experience in catering to the practical needs of the C2C enthusiasts. I found it charming in ambience and it has a delightful lounge to relax in at the end of a tough hiking day.

7 friends on the C2C stayed here. The house is a lovely old building that is comfortable to stay in. A bit crowded in the triple room. Nice breakfast. We had a very wet day and unfortunately our boots socks and gaiters were not dry the next day. Jean made us welcome but did have a lot of rules that... More

Everything about this place was excellent. The warm welcome. Arriving mid morning by the Sherpa van (due to me being unwell) the Host was very comforting, allowing me to go straight to our room & rest. I sadly missed the trek from Glen Ridding but was able to continue the next day after a wonderful breakfast and a packed lunch.... More

Similar to Paul R review below - I also arrived from Patterdale - soaked through due to some very inclement November weather. Jean was perfect hostess managing the drying process of all my gear. The Hermitage is a charming property, the room was warm and comfortable with ensuite bath and radox provided to soak away any aches and pains. Breakfast... More

After hiking from Patterdale to Shap and because of the earlier evenings, we were to arrive later than expected. When we got to the B&B we were made to feel so welcome by Jean . Jean asked us into the hallway despite our appearence after a days hiking and took our wet and muddy clothes to be dried.Jeans very pleasant and... More

Stunning old 17th century house with plenty of charm. Jean was welcoming and showed us to our twin room and we shared an ensuite with her. Yes the floor is uneven and the doors low but there is a certain charm to this property. Lighting is low and the twin beds quite small, old and squeaky. Two bedside lamps would... More

Our first bath! What a relief to finally soak our aching muscles and feet after days on the Coast to Coast walk! And a huge room in which to spread out our luggage and get ourselves sorted before the next day's hike. We walked into Shap from the southern end to stop for a meal at the recommended Greyhound pub... More
