Lovely building and surrounding area. The hotel needs some attention along with the room we stayed in, it was dark due to the low light led bulbs and the decor and furniture were dated. The staff were friendly and helpful and breakfast was good (need real sausages, not the fake Walls type). It has not inspired us to stay again,... More

Friendly staff and a reasonable standard of cleanliness. An excellent evening meal - tasty, generous portions and a fair price. The full English breakfast, on the other hand, left something to be desired: there was plenty of it but the quality was not great...poor, tasteless bacon and tinned tomatoes. The TV in the bedroom did not work. Overall, however, not... More

I have not stayed in this hotel. For all I know it's a great place. So the "when did you stay" box of this review is misleading. It's when we would like to have stayed. And misleading information is the subject of this review. Ellenbank hotel currently (30/07/2014) advertise their twin rooms for £75.00. When I rang to book a... More

We stayed at Ellenbank on the 24th May bank holiday weekend. The hotel is in a nice location and the building from the outside was quite impressively old. We asked the lady who welcomed us how old the place was and she didn't have a clue, said she was new which we didn't feel was excusable. Anyway the room was... More

My husband and I stayed at this establishment on 11th February, on arrival we were informed that there had been a problem with the heating system that day, which had been mended and an oil heater had been placed in our room. The building itself had a chill about it but our room itself was warm on first entering. We... More

Didn't stay but phoned Ellenbank to arrange breakfast for 11 people after we had experienced a powercut for 36 hours in Allonby. Ellenbank were happy to oblige, they moved quickly to accommodate us and even allowed us to have showers. Breakfasts were wonderful (full English and vegetarian) and everyone left happy.

Work took me to this hotel, it's a beautiful hotel, rooms very clean, shower not the best, staff were great, food is the best I have had for a very long time, I would stay there again, I stayed weekend 26/10/13---28/10/13, the hotel is ever so quiet, not much noise at all.

Bedroom compact and clean. Ensuite sufficient although shower in bath may not suit everyone. Not able to carry luggage up numerous narrow staircases. Breakfast well cooked and tasty. Staff friendly and helpful.

Apparently, Ellenbank was built in the early 1800’s by John Ritson, the Maryport shipbuilding magnate and continued to be lived in by the Ritson family until around 1980. Since then a conference wing has been built but this has not detracted from the elegance of the reception hall and the 2 dining rooms with beautiful stain glass window panes and... More
