We stayed here for a couple of nights as we were attending a relations wedding in nearby Whitehaven. Wish we'd read the reviews here first! The Landlord / Owner gave us the creeps and went out of his way to make us feel most unwelcome and only spoke about 3 sentences during our stay. Rooms were very basic and the... more

stayed with friends for a long weekend and was an ideal base for walking in the locality and dispite the weather on the Sunday found it centrally based for local towns. We were well looked after by the owner and found the rooms very comfortable with lovely bathrooms and good pressure showers. Typical pub food but a good selection, real... more

Arrived to an unwelcoming 'welcome'. When I said that I had an early appointment (8am. Is that unusual?) in nearby Whitehaven I was told that an early breakfast would be inconvenient for the host, but he would get up earlier. He didn't and I got no breakfast. Went to bed fully clothed because it was so cold. Heating, such as... more

This 'couple' basically have the monopoly in this village - owning the only two obvious places to stay (Shepherds Arms and Fox and Hounds) they charge £89 p/n - double what other B&B's charge, and offer such a bad service you leave feeling wound-up and angry. [There were too many disasters in our one night stay to list]. I would... more

Advice to landlords: When guests arrive, try not to look as if you can't be bothered to get up from your tea. Remove the bossy notices telling people what they can't do. The one saying that outdoor furniture is provided 'for your convenience' , then saying that people who move it around will be asked to leave, is particularly officious.... more

We have just returned from our 2 night stay at this 'hotel'. I have never written a review of a hotel I have stayed in before, but people need to be warned about this one. Some rooms have been renovated and are apparently quite nice, however our 2 rooms hadn't been refurbished and whilst I can live with old fashioned... more

I was part of a group of five coast to coasters who arrived bedraggled and hungry with a dog at 9.30pm on our first night. We were touched to be told by the manager that he had already alerted the police for us. He offered to cook a meal for us , as his chef had already left for the... more

It was aterrible experience for which we paid dearly. It is nowhere near the Lake and is an 8 bedroomed pub. The landlord has no idea about making you welcome and it is the last place on earth I would recommend. Save your money and find somewhere elsewhere. I wish I had taken some photos to back up this review.... more

Management response from

This reviewer is certainly not typical of the thousands of people who stay with us and comment positively and favourably on their stay at The Shepherds Arms. There are usually two sides to a story and this is very true in this case and, without going into too much detail, we went out of our way to meet their requests...

I stayed here on business in 2007 and subsequently on a couple of leisure breaks. I do not normally do reviews but I have recommended this place to colleagues and friends, one of whom checked on trip advisor and asked me "are you sure this is the same place?" Rooms, I stayed in recently refurbished rooms with huge beds, flat... more

My husband & I took our dog for a new year getaway. Food was good and plentiful & the staff were very pleasant. Entertainment was fun as we were piped into the new year This is our third visit and have seen the place transformed since the new owner took over. We stayed in a recently renovated room with a... more
