An excellent stay with staff who were extremely helpful. The rooms were of a high quality and some other more traditional pubs (Black Bull, Reeth) could learn a lot from The Fox + Hounds that do try and make a difference.

I camped here for my first night on the Coast to Coast after a long walk from St Bees. You know you're in a good place when you're welcomed with the question, "What would you like to do first? Pitch your tent or have a beer?" The welcome, the food and the beer made up for not having a shower... More

We stayed here overnight during a half-C2C walk and were pretty tired after a long day's march, so it was a treat to get Kate's warm hospitality and efficiency as soon as we arrived. The whole team (I gather it's community run) were friendly and produced meals, beers, breakfasts and packed lunches with ease. Tasty and generous portions and spacious,... More

Its a long first day from St Bees and the Fox and Hounds was a welcome sight. The room was nice and quite - over looking the graveyard! Large comfortable bed and very friendly staff. Food was typical pub fare and good value. Packed lunch and WiFi fulfilled all other needs !

We did a charity walk up Scafell Pike and we were really ready for a good meal! We managed to get squeezed in as the pub was so busy with diners. My husband and I had the Ribeye Steak which was locally sourced and believe me it was the best steak we have eaten and the home made chips to... More

This place is recommended in Stedman’s C2C guide, and for good reason. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly; food is plentiful and hearty. I pitched my tent on the grassed area at the side of the hotel, and enjoyed the company of other C2C walkers. Breakfast was convivial and nourishing, and supporting community-owned hotels like this leaves a warm inner... More

Bad food! The staff tried to be pleasant but the atmosphere was dry and quiet. If there had been anywhere else to eat we would have left. The chips were billed as home made but I'm sure they weren't. My "risotto" tasted like a tin of rice pudding with cream thrown in for good measure, the plate was surrounded by... More

Just had lunch here, the lamb steak was lovely, steak & ale pie was probably lovely when it was freshly cooked, but after being reheated a few times was a tad dry, maybe @ 10.95 for a main is a bit high. Couldn't fault the service & would probably go again

I was part of a group of friends who decided to have a drink at the local hostelry at the end of a pleasant evening as part of a choir singing by the lake. This hostelry was taken over by the community to save it from closing. It has won awards from the council and from CAMRA. We ordered drinks including... More

Visited this local pub after walking the fells. Have to say it had a good range of real ale, and the food was good pub grub. Have to say the bar staff were lovely and attentive, didn't catch the young blonde girls name but was served by a polite gentleman named Ross. Would highly recommend a visit, and we will... More
