We stayed at this hotel for two nights on a special offer .We picked the best time to go as the weather was perfect for walking and then in the evening sitting in the garden with a glass of wine before the midges came out.We cannot fault this hotel ,the location is spectacular the rooms are traditional with all the... stayed there with my elderly mother for 2days on the way to scotland, which was fantastic. Very dissappionted with the Borrowdale as I have stayed there several times before and enjoyed my stay before. The staff were very condescending and the service was dreadful! The menu was very limited, although very well cooked no vegitables were offered in 2 days... More

I've been visiting the Borrowdale for many years but this was my first time since it was sold to new owners. It isn't the same but we still enjoyed our stay. It has had a lot of work done and our room was lovely. The furnishings and bathroom were modern and spotlessly clean. The towels and bathrobes were so soft... More

Visited here with my mother for a two night break, as we don't get to spend much time together due to me travelling a lot on business. Got a Travel zoo deal, and paid for an upgrade. I don't know why they bother to offer these deals as clearly their staff feel it is beneath them to deal with these... More

This hotel is in an idyllic location in the Borrow Dale valley and so it is straight out of the door and off for wonderful walks around Derwent Water and the surrounding area. A bus from/to Keswick (worth a visit) stops right outside. We spent a few days here and really enjoyed our stay, the friendly service and the Hotel... More

Just got back from a three day break. accompanied by two nieces and my 13year old grand daughter. Staff and accommodation could not have been better. The staff really made my grand daughter feel special, many thanks to them. The visit was to spread my wife's ashes so it was very important to me that things went well.I would like to... More

A couple of years since we last visited, during which the hotel had changed ownership, good to confirm that standards remain excellent as before, some of the old staff (retainers are still there) well worth a visit

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Nestled at the foot of Shepherd's Crag in the beautiful valley of Borrowdale, this hotel has a totally unique atmosphere enveloping the visitors from the moment they arrive. Warm and welcoming fires in the Winter and cool drinks and strawberry teas on the lawns in the Summer served with a smile. Built in 1866, the Borrowdale Hotel has an interesting history with the original 41 room bells, which, although no longer working, are still proudly displayed outside the reception area. The restaurant has been refurbished to a very high standard and is very elegant and comfortable. It also now boasts a superb walk-in wine cellar stocked with some very interesting bottles. During the day the lounge bar and conservatory are open for light lunches and afternoon teas and in the evening a splendid 5 course silver service dinner can be enjoyed in the restaurant with coffee and mints served in the lounges. The 36 cosy bedrooms all have TV, telephone and hospitality tray and whether you are looking to book a romantic break staying in one of the 4 poster bedrooms, a family holiday with the children, an energetic break walking with your dog or just of couple of relaxing days, there are rooms to suit all. If you are arriving or leaving on a Sunday make sure not to miss the famous Sunday lunch - it is well worth trying, but remember to book your table well in advance, as it is particular popular with both locals and residents. For those looking for dog friendly hotels, we have a small number of dog friendly bedrooms available for well behaved dogs. Please contact reservations for information about our dog friendly accommodation. ... more   less
