Enjoyed 2 nights at this hotel on Monday and Tuesday. Very friendly helpful staff and good food. Room was a bit small but had a super large bed and very clean. Room was overlooking car park at back so not brilliant view although could see sheep grazing in distance. Beautiful gardens where you could have tea and scones. Excellent base... More

olde world victorian charm! Dress for dinner - never mind if the others don't! Very attentive Romanian and local staff, dinners are terrific right through to the cheese trolley. Admire the old maps and pictures on the walls. Adjourn to the drawing room for coffee and games. Walk in the garden, rest after a hike, take full advantage of breakfast,... More

We wanted to book the Lodore Falls as thats where we have gone most of the time. Wasn't impressed with the managers attitude there but fortunately they had a very helpful girl on the desk who suggested the a Borrowdale and even rang them for us. Boy are we glad she did! My 9 year old was ecstatic that she... More

My husband and I have just returned from a wonderful two night break at the Borrowdale. After reading some of the reviews we weren't sure what to expect but we needn't have worried. We enjoyed every moment from playing board games in the lounge to the pimms and crumpets on arrival and the cooked breakfasts really set you up for... More

Stayed 3 nights on an excellent value dinner, B & B offer. Our prestige room (31) on the top floor had windows on two sides, fell and lake views, a huge bed, plenty of space and was extremely comfortable. The whole hotel has just been refurbished and has a fresh, up-to-date feel without the sacrifice of traditional virtues, including relaxing... More

Situated on the banks of Derwent Water, The Borrowdale Hotel proved to be an exceptionally good overnight experience. My wife and I had negotiated tea & scones on arrival, five-course dinner, standard room overnight followed by breakfast. All were truly excellent and extremely good value at £139.00 all in. They need to sharpen-up their act at reception which didn't provide... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Nestled at the foot of Shepherd's Crag in the beautiful valley of Borrowdale, this hotel has a totally unique atmosphere enveloping the visitors from the moment they arrive. Warm and welcoming fires in the Winter and cool drinks and strawberry teas on the lawns in the Summer served with a smile. Built in 1866, the Borrowdale Hotel has an interesting history with the original 41 room bells, which, although no longer working, are still proudly displayed outside the reception area. The restaurant has been refurbished to a very high standard and is very elegant and comfortable. It also now boasts a superb walk-in wine cellar stocked with some very interesting bottles. During the day the lounge bar and conservatory are open for light lunches and afternoon teas and in the evening a splendid 5 course silver service dinner can be enjoyed in the restaurant with coffee and mints served in the lounges. The 36 cosy bedrooms all have TV, telephone and hospitality tray and whether you are looking to book a romantic break staying in one of the 4 poster bedrooms, a family holiday with the children, an energetic break walking with your dog or just of couple of relaxing days, there are rooms to suit all. If you are arriving or leaving on a Sunday make sure not to miss the famous Sunday lunch - it is well worth trying, but remember to book your table well in advance, as it is particular popular with both locals and residents. For those looking for dog friendly hotels, we have a small number of dog friendly bedrooms available for well behaved dogs. Please contact reservations for information about our dog friendly accommodation. ... more   less
