Very helpful staff, everyone made us feel comfortable and welcome. The food was of a very high standard and reasonably priced. Beautiful views from the bar, rooms and beer garden on which to enjoy the tremendous selection of well kept ales! Can't recommend enough!

The Cumberland Hotel offers you a warm welcome deep in the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We'd just enjoyed a slow ramble towards the High Force Falls, reputed to be the highest waterfall in England. Spectacular for photo shoots and natural vista and wild life and building up an appetite for a hearty lunch. We... More

This hotel is great value for money- it is a little worn around the edges but the atmosphere and food makes up for it. We booked lay minute on New Year's Eve an we're lucky to get the last room. Check-in is from 2pm-9pm which was perfect as we turned up at 8pm. We went to the bar to ask... More

We visited the Cumberland Hotel on two occasions recently - alas we didn't stay here! The food was fantastic with a very varied menu - excellent choice of real ales too. The friendliness and atmosphere within the bar was just about the best you could get anywhere!! Well worth a visit to this traditional English country pub with true hospitality.

I was booked into a pub around the corner, but on arrival the place was in darkness. So I found the Cumberland close by and glad I did. I was shown to room 2 - a large double with large en-suite. Great value at £42 B&B. Evening meal was tastie and breakfast to die for! Thanks to Guy and Helen (not to... More

My wife was not happy when we first arrived as it looked a bit run down. Went to the shops before they closed. When we came back heating was not working so had to move to another room. Although this was above the kitchen, that was probably better than being over the bar. However it seemed to be heaving in... More

Cycled over from home in truly atrocious weather. Was pleased to arrive at the Cumberland. Bike stored safely, shown to room (4). Clean, tidy, ample heaters, ensuite, wifi, tv. Super breakfast, full english, ample, coffee and toast. Would definitely return

Our bikes were securley placed in a store room under the hotel and then we were taking to our room which was lovely and spacious with good facilities. Yes it might be near to a bit of a refurbish which could be said about other parts of the hotel. My wife thought her breakfast was excellent and the bar had... More

We visited the Cumberland Hotel as a family many years ago so we were interested to see how different it would be. The landlady gives a no-nonsense welcome and I can honestly say that I've never had a host take so much care. She quietly notices everything and helps accordingly. Don't expect frills. We don't do frilly in Cumbria and... More

We used the Cumberland as a stop on the C2C cycle route. The staff are friendly, and there is a good range of beers in the bar. The rooms are ok too. The only downside is that the whole place clearly needs a few pounds spending on it in terms of refurbishment. We ate dinner over the road. Would definitely... More
