The approach to Lovelady Shield is charming until you arrive at the end of the drive to be greeted by extremely unattractive recycling bins and, as you swing into the car park, are met by further black bags and bins. Not an auspicious start to two nights away. On getting out of the car it was evident that the sewer... More

My husband booked via Living Social to stay at Lovelady Shield for two nights, both including breakfast and with the first night having a seven course taster menu. The hotel is located about 3 miles from Alston this being a very rural environment. Our room - a superior one - was quite basic, drab, dirty and provided a lengthy droning... More

Stayed for two nights. Very easy to miss the road that leads to the hotel, as there is no sign other than a small stone with the name engraved on it. I notice from your replies Grumps that a new sign is on its way, until then expect some slightly bemused visitors. I have to agree with reviewers regarding the... More

My partner had a voucher for a hotel stay when she bought some very expensive tyres, so we unfortunately booked with Lovelady Shield Hotel. We drove down the drive and over a bridge to be greeted by a giant recycling cage and a plywood shed ! continued on and had to park near overflowing bins! got out the car noticed... More

We booked a two night stay using a Travel Zoo voucher which included a 7 course tasting menu with a wine package. Sadly we were disappointed with several of the courses especially the main course which was sirloin steak and beef cheeks. We were not alone, several customers sent their main back as it was too cold. We were later... More

The hotel is a few miles out of Alston down a single track lane nestled by a small river. The entrance to the lane has a small sign which we missed twice, a roadside sign or a bigger sign on the post would be very useful. The hotel is in a lovely spot though somewhat tired looking, a lick of... More

Hotel is in a beautiful quiet setting. Our room was large and comfortable. Staff very friendly and helpful. The highlight of our overnight stay was definitely the evening meal - taster menu. We started with a drink in the bar and were taken to our table from there. The dining room had a lovely atmosphere and the food was excellent.... More

This is the third time we've stayed here and we'll keep coming. The room is lovely, traditionally styled as befits the property, and obviously with great views. It's a shame we were a bit late arriving as we spent ages looking for petrol in the area first (clearly our own fault). The tasting menu and breakfast were as great as... More

The hotel is beautifully situated and could be super if it was better kept. The sampler gourmet meal was very good and very enjoyable. However, our first night was spoilt because the room was cold (particularly the bathroom!) and noisy. We were moved for our last two nights but had to move twice to do so! Great breakfasts and lovely... More

Just come back from spending Saturday night here. It was a little like stepping back in time but the hotel and staff were great. Our room was comfy and clean. We had the 7 course taster which was amazing. Would definitely recommend it but it is in the middle of nowhere. We will be coming back for more.
