The hotel is a delightful old country house in a superbly peaceful location alongside a river with views of the hills all around. It clearly needs an injection of funds to restore the neglected exterior paintwork and the furnishings, curtains, even towels are all well worn but perfectly clean. So if you can cope with shabby sheik you can get... More

the first two things you notice are: a beautiful building, in desperate need of paint. The person greeting us wasn't overly friendly but showed us efficiently to our room. The room was tiny but the view was great. Then I noticed a drain smell and cobwebs on the ceiling....we were quickly moved to a much larger room. The one just... More

Grumps is getting a bit of an airing at the moment. It seems you have had an unfortunate experience but some of your vented spleen is not correct and needs correcting. First you are in the country and fields are sprayed with silage. It is just too easy to blame the plant. First it is not a septic tank it... More

We paid extra fore an upgrade to a luxury room: Towels were frayed Sofa was dropping to bits it had patches sewn onto the arms, a broken zip on the seat cushion Balcony outside window was filthy and overgrown as was the path in the grounds Overall the hotel was very shabby and in need of a total overhaul. Food... More

Grumps here and I feel your review somewhat bias. First, thank you for your comments about the food and our staff. Glad to know you enjoyed some of your stay. As to the room I am perplexed about the linen as we have replenished our stocks and all linen is brand new. Secondly the sofa is not falling apart. New... More

This is the 2nd time we've been to Lovelady. We get a deal with Travelzoo. Excellent value. I've read some of the reviews mostly good to excellent. However the more negative ones leave me thinking that some people want to find a bad point (probably so they can ask for a refund!) Ok there is some decorating that needs to... More

Lovelady Shield is a bit like a favourite great aunt. Yes, there are a few wrinkles, some modest eccentricity and not all is in the first flush of youth. But she is kindly, comfortable, reassuringly old-fashioned in many respects and a lot of fun. This was our fourth visit and we look forward to more. It is a lovely country... More

Yes the rooms and outside need a bit of attention to the decor but the welcome and service was superb. Very comfy bed and great breakfast. Our experiences were first rate and we will be back. We had a deal on the tasting menu and English wine flight which were both exquisite.

We have been here before, and again weren't disappointed. The food was delicious, our accommodation superb, and the staff are always so helpful and lovely. This is truly a gem. It may look a little tired on the surface, but it certainly makes up for it due to quality of service. It's just right for exploring the Lakes and surrounding... More

Our second time at The Lovelady Shield Country House Hotel (my review of the dining experience is under the restaurant heading), was another good one. Please try to remember that this is Georgian Country House, where small signs of its age are externally evident, although the interior is maintained to a good standard. Our room was very comfortable and well... More

Last week my husband and I had a short break away. We had booked for a couple of nights at The Lovelady Shield near Alston in Cumbria The scenery in this part of the world is simply stunning and our approach to the hotel was just beautiful . Yes , the sign was missing but that was due to the... More
