This attractive structure was built in 1890 by Don Rafael Almada, a wealthy and influential "alcalde" (mayor) who spent five years and 100,000 gold pesos on its construction. The wooden trim was made from 285 Canadian red pine beams. Don Rafael's mansion was the largest and most beautiful in El Fuerte. It was built just below the old fort, and has four layers of brick and adobe construction. The iron work was brought from Mazatlan. more » « less

This is one of the Balderama hotels that exemplifies old Colonial Mexico. The location of the hotel can't be matched. Walk down the ramp and your in the heart of the zocolo with the gazebo and the cathedral and municipal palance next door. While a tourist destination the town is set up for Mexicans and you'd be hard pressed to... more

The Posada del Hidalgo makes you feel like you are long, lost Mexican family. The service is over the top and the food is well prepared and expertly served. The bar/pool is cozy during the day and lit by luminaries at night. This is a great place to stay and the float trip on the River El Fuete makes it... more

The Del Hidalgo is a colonial mansion turned into a delightful hotel. The rooms open towards private gardens that are open to the stars. Mexican tiles are arranged in interesting patterns in the walkways and flowers grow everywhere. Hummingbirds zing back and forth and cozy seats let you watch them or simply rest with a good book. Our room had... more

We stayed two nights as part of a package tour. Our room was facing a city street and was extremely noisy at night. Most rooms have wooden shutters on the windows and they offer no sound-proofing at all. The front desk (somewhat reluctantly) moved us to a different room which was much quieter. A few rooms are located next to... more

A friend and I toured the Copper Canyon in northern Mexico (one of the 'great train rides of the world') - you can see some of my other reviews on trip advisor. This is the hotel we used in El Fuerte. Excellent location in the city (it is a small town, actually). We had arranged for pick-up at the train... more

I spent two days at this hotel in El Fuerte as part of my 8-day roundtrip Copper Canyon railroad trip. This was one of my favorite places. The hotel staff was great and accommodating. I used the massage service which was great. The food is not really authentic Mexican - it is more American Mexican which caters to the over... more

We just returned from a trip to the Copper Canyon and had a pleasant two-night stay at the Posada Del Hidalgo. It was a high-light of an already wonderful holiday over the New Years Holiday. Inn is old-world, quaint and well decorated. Staff is attentive and speaks English well. No TV nor phone in our rooms but this only added... more

We booked directly with Balderrama (along with Posada Mirador in the Copper Canyon region, which included meals and transportation to/from the station). It wasn’t made clear what we would get for our money, and when we arrived we were told that we would be charged extra for the taxi that had just picked us up! The hotel is charming and... more

My wife and I just returned from a 6 day adventure through the Copper Canyon, and Posada del Hidalgo in El Fuerte was our first stop. Upon arriving to the hotel we were pleased to see the rustic look of the old hacienda, the beautiful gardens, and the warmness of the people. Although the above is no exageration, the room... more
