I have never written a review for trip advisor about vacations before, but I felt compelled to write about this charming culinary getaway. Jon and Estella have a beautiful home and they will welcome you into their hearts as well. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Carmelita; from the insanely gorgeous gardens to the simple yet enchanting accommodations that... More

I just finished a week at Mexican Home Cooking School and want to give my review and opinions on what Estela is offering at her school. I am a cook, not a professional but I do have a long term experience in the kitchen. I live in Mexico and have been studying its cuisine for the last 20 years. I... More

It has been two months since our stay at Casa Carmelita with friends. I've never written a review before but feel compelled to, our stay was truly remarkable. This was our first visit to Mexico, our family members voiced concern for our safety, especially since we traveling to a rural destination. We felt totally safe and looked after by Jon... More

We spent a precious week of vacation here based on the rave reviews on this website. Yet for over $400 a night per couple – a significant amount in Mexico – this was one of the strangest and stingiest travel experiences we’ve ever had (and I spent 25 years as a food and travel journalist, so I’ve seen plenty). The... More

Dear Heidi Y I am confused by many points you made as they don't match mine or other guests, but enough to say that you were here four days and not a week - though from your review it must have felt like a week. And I am sorry you didn't express your dissatisfaction at the time. If we had... More

Happily, this has been my second trip to Casa Carmelita. My first trip there was three years ago. This time I wanted to share my first experience with my wife and two good friends. In short, we had a wonderful time. Jon and Estella are a very nice couple and will do anything to ensure you have a good experience.... More

What a wonderful week my friend and I enjoyed at Casa Carmelita! It was the perfect mix of learning new cooking skills, exploration of a beautiful countryside and historic sites, enjoying delicious and freshly prepared foods, meeting interesting people, and relaxing. Jon and Estela are fantastic hosts, and great teachers. Jon makes sure that the kitchen is well-run, and Estela... More

I have taken cooking classes for years but never one in Mexico - this was exactly what I had hoped for - an authentic, personal, hands-on experience with wonderful food and recipes to bring back so I can recreate then in my own home. John and Estella were warm and interesting hosts who also provided lots of helpful information on... More

This week with Estelle and Jon has been an experience like no other. I have learned to make many recipes that I will be able to reproduce for friends and family at home. This was a wonderful experience for a solo traveler. I made many friends and enjoyed the warm sunny climate of central Mexico.

What a fantastic experience Casa Carmilita is! The oasis imagined and built by Jon and Estela is like stepping into a Spanish fairy tale. Except there is a real experience of superb teaching and learning about traditional Pueblan cooking. Estela's rich knowledge of her craft is conveyed simply and the constant hands on approach for we learners that the partners... More

Can't voice enough positive comments to describe my traditional Pueblan cooking school experience. I had a checklist of specifics I wanted to learn about; each and every one was dealt with Estelle's professional and deep knowledge of the cuisine or Jon's learned 'sous chef' skills. I came away with a new appreciation and growing confidence for all the diverse nuances... More
