Val D'Or is surprisingly expensive. The price of gold means the town and the mining region are on an upswing and the prices swing up in tandem. Having tried many of the better motels/hotels in town we were feeling adventurous, due partly to a $160 per night rate at one of the above-mentioned establishments.

We had a very enjoyable stay at the charming Auberge Orpailleur in Val d'Or.
The inn compares very favorably to its more "commercial" competitors by the quality of its accomodation (the rooms are especially cute), the warmth of the welcoming (the owners are a nice French couple, with children) and its location in the middle of the charming Miners' village...
