The best private room we have had in a hostel so far. Our private room was more like a suite. The private rooms are on the second floor and share a lounge, washroom and a small deck. The whole property is very clean well cared for. Our bed was comfortable and the room was not crowded. It's was a refreshing... More

The hostel is not very big (compared to others in big cities), suited in a two-story big house, with large kitchen and dining room and spacious living room. This hostel is very well managed - very clean (spotless), staff always there to help, implementing a quiet-hour policy at night, many amenities, including laundry, bike rent, free wi-fi, and free coffee/tea.... We had a fantastic time at Bear on the Lake! Both the private rooms and dorms are spotless and comfortable. The hostel has a gorgeous view over Bras d'Or Lake and is just a five-minute drive from the grocery store. It's also an easy (and scenic!) drive up to the Cabot Trail. There was plenty of good company around the... More

Had the privilege of staying at this Hostel for 2 nights recently and would have to say it's the best hostel I've ever stayed at. It has everything you want in a hostel and more at an affordable price, and the owner, Carmen, is a wonderful host, thank you for a wonderful stay.

Quiet, almost secluded location - however busy trucks on road at night. Staff are v friendly and helpful. One day may be enough here and then drive on up the island! Place is clean! Beds are grand. Good powerful shower! Nay impressed with the 3% surcharge on credit card payments (not stated prior to our arrival).

I arrived late as I was unable to find the Bear due to crazy GPS issues but Christiane was still very helpful and accommodating. Nice ambience and good facilities, felt more like a relaxing time with friends. On the downside I didn't have any cash on me so it was a bit of a pain having to pay for my... More

The private rooms upstairs are a great bargain at $70 - very quiet and comfortable with a shared bath and living room, balcony with a beautiful view of the lake and a outside entry. The welcome was warm and friendly!

I stayed at Bear on the Lake in June and I had an amazing time! Since the place is rather small you feel more like you rented an awesome place for vacation and not like you’re staying at a hostel. When you come in there’s a big common area with a spacious kitchen that offers a lot of storage room... More

This is probably one of the best hostels I ever stayed at! An excellent base while doing the Cabot Trail. The guys there gave me some great information for some local hiking spots! I met some great people, thanks to Carmen, Christiane, Marie, Anna and Jesse! Make sure you bring some beers, to sit back, chill and chat and meet... More

Four of us rented the two private rooms for two separate nights, and our stay was wonderful. Nice rooms (basic but very clean), separate common area with own deck and good view out to the lake for the two private rooms, very friendly staff (special thanks to Christiane, the assistant manager, who was welcoming and helpful), and a good kitchen/common...
