I stayed here 2 nights in late September. It was a fantastic experience. The place is really clean with nice comfy beds. In the evenings the place is alive with people...everyone getting together to talk about their various daytime activities. Carman is a great host...he even took me hiking! I cannot recommend this place enough! It has amazing views over... More

This hostel was everything that a great hostel is - nice and small, a few connected, yet separate common rooms, a big dining table that helps to produce great conversation between people staying, and a nice big kitchen. There was a book share and the beds were comfy with nice linen. Super friendly manager.

We stayed at this hostel for one night in a private room. Carman was very friendly and welcoming and his hostel has a really nice atmosphere. The room was lovely, and the bed very comfy! The lounge and balcony that we shared with the other private room upstairs have a nice view of the lake. We met some friendly people... More

Right from arrival Carmin and Mel make you feel welcomed to this beautiful and social hostel. The hostel is clean, comfortable, and in a great location to travel the Cabot trail and visit Bras D'Or lake. We stayed in a private room which shared a small living room and a very clean washroom with one other room; it offered great... More

Well, what can we add to all these excellent comments below.... We also loved the place, and totally agree with everything. Carman is the perfect host and he keeps a super clean place where you feel at home and meet lots of interesting people. We stayed in the 2 bedrooms apartment upstairs with our friends, with a living-room and our... More

We booked Bear on the Lake as a base to see Cape Breton. Great Decision! The place is friendly, welcoming and it was so cool to just hang out with the other guests. We spent the days exploring and then came back to the hostel to relax and make dinner. We sat around, with guests from Quebec, Belgium, The UK,... More

We stayed in the guesthouse for two days - but we could definetly have stayed for longer. The prices are reasonable at 28 CAD for a dorm bed and 70 CAD for a private room. The near vicinity is full of fantastic hiking, whale watching, eating and swimming etc. We spend the first night roasting marshmellows over a campfire before... More

We spent two perfect days in Cape Breton because of Bear on the Lake. Carmen is a great host and gave lots of advice about what to see on the Cabot Trail. The other guests also happened to be great, and we had a camp fire with fiddle and guitar jams. The beds were comfy, the bathrooms clean and a... More

What a place to stay. The location is brilliant, set well back from roads bordering a forest. The pictures really don't do it justice - great location for the Cabot Trail and neighboring towns. Carmen is a wonderful host, engaging, helpful and very knowledgeable about anything related to Cape Breton or places to visit. Very clean kitchen, good strong wifi,... More
