Stayed in "The Barn". Very clean but rustic - a nature lovers paradise! Myself and a 2 old friends stayed during an overnight visit to Grand Manan. James allowed us to see inside most of the buildings before vacationers arrived. Each has its own uniqueness. ..the Lookout was our 1st choose for a couple vacationing and Larch Grove or Fern... Our family (parents, kid, kid's friends, dog) has visited Grand Manan Island many times, often camping at Anchorage Provincial Park, wh I also highly recommend, and we stayed at Castalia Marsh Retreat two summers when camping wasn't an option. We stayed there most recently in *August 2011.* We stayed for one week in Fern Alley when it was initially constructed... More

Lurch Grove is simply the perfect place for a family or friends to unwind and just let relax. Views from all sides are second to none. There are even feeders outside the window and a set of binoculars. A bookshelf lined with books, movies and, puzzles. Very quaint with wood limbs for hangers, live plants, and wait til you see the... This is the place to unplug When you just want to sit, relax, read a book and drink a cup of tea then you have found it. We spent a very special week in the Bird House and loved every minute. James will make you feel as welcome as a lost relative whilst giving you as much privacy as you... More

This was my third stay in 2 years at Castalia Marsh Retreat. In fact, on my first stay (September 2013) I decided that this was "the place" to hold my wedding! I spoke to James and made arrangements to book the entire retreat for the wedding/reception & I am so glad we did - it was PERFECT!! If you love... More

My husband and I stayed in the Birdhouse cabin for 3 nights while visiting in July. The cabin was small but well laid out to make the most of every space. If you love nature and being eco friendly, this is the place to go. The bed was in the loft area with 3 large windows. The sunrise and sunsets... More

So different, so fun. Cabins with everything you could want. Fern alley. Woke up to a sunrise view of the marsh without even getting out of bed. Environmentally friendly cabins and friendly host. Close to puffin tours and whale watching tours.

We were heading out east to visit friends and the Castalia Marsh Retreat (CMR) was one of the main reasons we decided to visit Grand Manan Island. I had found the place online rather by chance and dialed into its funkiness right away. The property on Castalia Marsh is ramshackle and makeshift -- partly why we loved it so --... More

My kids and I spent 10 wonderful days in the Birdhouse in late July. I'm glad we chose the marsh over a more traditional beach location. You may not hear the sound of the surf or have a sandy beach at your doorstep, but the wildlife of the marsh is an amazing trade-off. Waking up to the sound of Bald... More

We stayed at Castalia Marsh Retreat during our recent trip to Grand Manan and I’m so glad we did. It literally made our vacation! Like other people have written, if you’re looking for a 5-star hotel, this is not your place. But if you’re looking for a unique, fun, comfortable and unforgettable spot, this could very well be it for... More
