The public areas are very smart (evoking a colonial mansion), however, our room was a bit tired (needs a repaint), and the door was a bit wobbly. good view across the bay to Colombo. The swimming pool area, bar, restaurant are all very good (the food was ver y nice but the wine was a bit expensive £££). good large... more

This Hotel is crammed pack of colonial charm. Even as you walk in the man on the door is dressed in old colonial regalia. I have stayed in a few different parts of the hotel and each room has been delightful. I love looking out over the sea and seeing the twinkle of lights in the distance of Colombo. The... more

In general, the hotel is ok, the view is excellent and food is good. Staff are courteous and helpful. However, reading through the Trip Advisor reviews, I booked for a room in the Governor's wing. Upon arrival at mid night, the receptionist informed me that no room in the Governor's wing is being rented out due to maintenance. It was... more

Mount Lavinia needs to be understood, if you're comparing it to the Ritz or a fancy boutique hotel then of course its not going to live up to your standards. Its like driving a 60's classic sports car and expecting it to have the modern day comforts of a brand new family saloon ML comes into its own when you... more

Stayed for 2 nights on arrival in Sri Lanka. The hotel is very elegant and oozes with colonial charm. The room was big, but showing a few signs of needing some TLC! Great to have an ocean view from the room. ML hotel is well located to get in to downtown sri lanka for markets/shopping (Fort/Pettah), having the ML station... more

Following advice from our tour operator we spent our first night here. Our room had a great view of the sea however it had a musty smell about it and looked in need of an overhaul. We were rather dissapointed with the resteraunt as no a la carte menu was offered . Staff were generally friendly and helpfull. more

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights in a suite in the Bay Wing of the hotel at the end of our tour around SL. The hotel is perched on a headland around 6 km outside the center of Colombo city - this is no problem, everything is just a short taxi ride away if you want to visit... more

We've stayed twice at this beautiful hotel for a period of 2 weeks at a stretch. The staff is extremely friendly, everyone smiling at you, opening the doors for you etc. The second time we came with our 2-year-old daughter and we weren't happy with the (old-fashioned) cot that they had provided; we simply told the reception about it and... more

Many tours spend first night here. Not sure why as at least a 2 hour run south from airport through the awful traffic. If you are then starting the northern tour (eg the Elephant Sactuary being the first stop), you have the same 2 hour trip back across the city. Anyway, the hotel is grand but tired. It is quite... more

Being a regular business traveller to Sri Lanka, I choose to stay at the Mount Lavinia hotel as a matter of routine now. You just can't beat the personalised service you're offered - it's as if they've known you for years. Everyone is smiling, asking you about your day, whether they can do anything further for you, is your room... more
