Needed accommodation for the night and just walked in and they had a room each for myself and my father. it is only a short drive/ bike ride etc from the Coonawarra wine region and the building is Heritage and National Trust listed and has the charm one would expect of 1800's the rooms were actually well appointed for a... Lovely and authentic country hotel that won't compromise on style to attract more custom. Visited the other hotel in town that was "daggy" and unclean. Immediately headed back to Heyward's where we experienced a warm atmosphere with very friendly staff. The evening meal was a real treat and John Heyward (Licensee) paid us a visit to check on our satisfaction.... More

The Royal Oak Hotel, a classic two story quarried building that was the first of its kind in this area. My room is small, with a single bed against the wall, but it is comfortable. I actually have a towel for the first time in days instead of my pack shammy towel. Most of the rooms on the second floor... More

Standing outside i had reservations, about staying in a hotel. But the surprise was most definitely upstairs. The rooms oozed with heritage charm, were spotless and included loving attention to all the small details. The shared bathrooms (separate for each gender) were spotless and included a bath and heat lamps for those chilly mornings. A big screen tv, handbasin, tea/coffee... More

We adored this gorgeous historic country hotel. Established in 1848, the Royal Oaks is the kind of place we dream about - good price, historic, friendly, and honest. If you love an old style Australian pub hotel, this place is for you. We don't mind shared bathrooms - they were clean and accessible and well appointed, and we loved the... More

Great pub menu, had Kangaroo and it was cooked to perfection. The hotel is a nice historical hotel and has good facilities with very friendly staff. Didn't stay at the hotel only dinned there. Worth a look at the history of the hotel.

just had lunch here. My squid looked like the "chef" just picked up a handful of squid, dipped it in batter and dropped the whole thing into hot fat. My husband was even less unfortunate, he had the hamburger. Must have been cooked last week along with the egg and bacon. All burned to a crisp. The burger was black... More

I visit Penola on a regular basis and always choose to stay at the Royal Oak. The hotel offers a warm and friendly atmosphere and the rooms are clean and tastefully decorated in keeping with the historic period. Many thoughtful extras above the basics are provided making it great value for the reasonable tariff; dressing gown, choccies, a range of... More

We went to the Royal Oak as it was recommended above other local venues. The dining room is very poorly laid out with patrons seating backing onto the small salad bar and limiting the access. Ther salad bar selction was attrocious. There were some open spaces in the dining room which could have been better utilised when some of the... More

Management response:

Thank you for your input we appreciate your comments. Since your post we have removed the salad and vegetable bar from the dining room and instead serve single portions of salad or vegetables with each meal. This has enabled as to rearrange the dining room to be more comfortable and accommodating for patrons. Our prices are user friendly with mains... More
