Hayward's Royal Oak Hotel has a wonderful charm, that makes you feel right a home (even on short stay). The small room had a four-poster bed (very comfortable) a TV and small basin. Shared bathrooms where very clean with a heater for those cold winter days (we where there in July). Everything was so well presented, this hotel had a... More

We stayed at this hotel for one night in order to visit Pipers at Penola during a weekend away. The room was clean and free wifi was included in the room rate. It was exactly as you'd expect: no frills accommodation suitable for a one night stay. I didn't love the shared bathroom and toilet arrangement, but I was pleased... More

We visited this hotel on an NZ Sheep Breeders tour and had two excellent dinners. The first night our group of 28 dined, the second night we were a group of 23, without exception everyone had an outstanding meal, the steaks were thick, juicy and perfectly cooked with a great selection of tasty sauces and yummy chips. The service was... More

Stopped here for one night whilst driving through. The rooms were good although everything looked a bit tired and needed some love and attention. The lovely thing is that the rooms have four poster beds. Free port is provided in the breakfast room so help yourself to a nightcap. There is some sort of breakfast served in a room. It... More

Needed accommodation for the night and just walked in and they had a room each for myself and my father. it is only a short drive/ bike ride etc from the Coonawarra wine region and the building is Heritage and National Trust listed and has the charm one would expect of 1800's the rooms were actually well appointed for a... Lovely and authentic country hotel that won't compromise on style to attract more custom. Visited the other hotel in town that was "daggy" and unclean. Immediately headed back to Heyward's where we experienced a warm atmosphere with very friendly staff. The evening meal was a real treat and John Heyward (Licensee) paid us a visit to check on our satisfaction.... More

The Royal Oak Hotel, a classic two story quarried building that was the first of its kind in this area. My room is small, with a single bed against the wall, but it is comfortable. I actually have a towel for the first time in days instead of my pack shammy towel. Most of the rooms on the second floor... More

Standing outside i had reservations, about staying in a hotel. But the surprise was most definitely upstairs. The rooms oozed with heritage charm, were spotless and included loving attention to all the small details. The shared bathrooms (separate for each gender) were spotless and included a bath and heat lamps for those chilly mornings. A big screen tv, handbasin, tea/coffee... More

We adored this gorgeous historic country hotel. Established in 1848, the Royal Oaks is the kind of place we dream about - good price, historic, friendly, and honest. If you love an old style Australian pub hotel, this place is for you. We don't mind shared bathrooms - they were clean and accessible and well appointed, and we loved the... More

Great pub menu, had Kangaroo and it was cooked to perfection. The hotel is a nice historical hotel and has good facilities with very friendly staff. Didn't stay at the hotel only dinned there. Worth a look at the history of the hotel.
