We choose The Blue Heron for a 3 night stay because of the Good rating on Booking.com. Our reservation was for 3 nights and we paid in advance as we have had good history with Booking. We checked in by talking to a man on a video monitor which was really bizarre. The room had rusty, ancient appliances in the kitchenette, no toilet lid, no spring gadget to keep toilet paper on holder, towels were yellow and gray and frayed. The caulking in the bathroom looks like a child did it. The description said vintage which meant everything was last renovated in the 60’s. The bedding and rug was old and ragged. The room was dark and dingy even with all the lights on. We asked for our money to be refunded by the motel or Booking. Both parties are saying that only the other one can give a refunded. Tried to get my credit card company to fix it. No luck. Stayed at the Comfort Inn and had a very nice stay.

Very Friendly clean with nice view. Small motel. Update , with Decor bathroom was dated but clean and painted nicely. We enjoyed it as we made our trip down early. And our condo was not available for our extra added day. I would definitely stay her again . brought back memories of my childhood

Only one I could afford for the season. I am so grateful. Manager very kind. Very clean. Beds very comfortable. Bring your own coffee. Room coffee cheap. Bring your own soap. They offer liquid on the wall. Bring your own shampoo. Right on the beach. Every room facing ocean with balcony. No breakfast, but fridge and microwave. It has indoor and outdoor pools. Very clean. Overall, I loved the fact I was able to stay on the ocean!! Definitely would come back! For it being an old building, it is still nice. Those complaining about the building should go pay double some place else.

Excellent value. Half the price of surrounding hotels but had indoor pool & hot tub!! Older but clean. And had both an ocean view and a sound view.!! We could see Manteo at night all lit up!! Very nice manager who tried hard to please us. Booked thru booking.com as 1 queen bed but got reserved into 2 full bed efficientcy with kitchenette. Needed the larger bed so mgr immediately swapped into a king! I can complain about anything for the price! Just be aware there’s no elevator so you have to walk the stairs if you’re not on 1st floor…there are 3 floors.

The location of this older hotel was perfect. Middle of the Outer Banks. No elevator, but a cargo carrier to the second and third floors for luggage. Nice private balcony to watch the water from. Indoor and outdoor pools.

The last time we stayed at this motel was 24 years ago, but we have never forgotten it. The local owner was wonderful and welcoming. It has since changed hands, but the physical structure remains mostly the same. We found the new owners’ kind, and the electronic kiosk for check in is effective. The attendant on the other end was able to answer practical questions, like “Where do we find the ice machine?” Sure, there is a spot of rust at every nail on every stair tread as you ascend the back stairs. The small tilt out windows above the tub used to provide wonderful ventilation but are now rusted in place. I do wish they would get rid of the couple of random and broken-down furniture items on the beach side and broken ac units between the buildings. Despite these minor details, these 1960s era buildings seem quite sound, and it still can offer a great experience. The new owners are making noticeable investments in the rooms themselves. Our two double room provided very comfortable new mattresses, a large flatscreen TV, a nice new chest of drawers, a full-sized drip coffee maker, mini-refrigerator, and a microwave. The very private balconies are wide. The Kitty Hawk high sitting chairs with a connecting middle table were most appreciated for seeing over the balcony. The opposite shared balcony is good for a brief sunset view over the Pamlico Sound. There is a regular small outdoor pool, a lap pool and a very nice indoor pool suite with a hot tub and bathrooms. With true beach facing location, this low frill lodging is more connected to the ocean than most. There is no breakfast of any kind offered here although a small supply of coffee is offered in the room. Nearby Sam and Omie’s, The Dunes, or Grits Grill all offer excellent hot breakfast. This is a quiet and non-pretentious place offers clean rooms with full-on ocean facing private balconies. It is not for picky or fastidious types who cannot handle minor flaws or an occasional smoker who may light up on their private balcony. Fishermen seemed to gravitate to the cheaper first floor dune view rooms in the north building. The second and third floor rooms in both buildings offer excellent water views above large natural dunes. The third is slightly better than the second. It is not really a big deal if you must have that view and wind up with a second-floor room. This motel offers great value, and we would most definitely stay here again. Though on a smaller scale, The Blue Heron has more amenities than some larger cooperate counterparts. I would like to be on that balcony or that bench along the boardwalk to the ocean right now. We prefer the more convenient and less congested South Nags Head location.

We booked with Booking.com, which I will NEVER use again! We did not get an ocean front room as booked. We had a crappy room over the office in the parking lot. The owner did not give a crap about what we paid for and what he gave us. It was a full size mattress on an iron beefcake and it felt like it was a box of lumber! It was a horrible experience and we left immediately. Our one year anniversary and it was almost ruined. Actually, I'm glad, because it was a dump. It was very clean, ill give them that, but a complete dump! We moved to the Comfort Inn and she had a King Oceanfront on the top floor with a fabulous bed! Couldn't have worked out better! Will never use booking.com or visit that crappy place ever again!

Free parking, truly ocean front with balcony and located away from crowd. Three pools with one indoor. Comfortable bed and HBO stations. What a great stay for a reasonable summer oceanfront price. We will return soon. Located close to Kill Devil Hills and main road with accomodations.

First time staying at The Blue Heron. The room was clean and upgrades were being made at the motel. The bed was comfy , new flat screen , small coffee pot , refrigerator and microwave in room. No hair dryer . Nice balcony to enjoy . If you are looking for an upscale place to stay this is not for you. This is an old school motel right on the beach, it’s worn and tattered, however if you wanna just enjoy the beach , relax and enjoy the views this is the place. We stayed on the 3rd floor and we had breathtaking views. Location was everything. The beach was right out of the back door. The pool was closed for the season and I did not get to the indoor pool or hot tub. The gentleman that checked us in was very nice. Overall I had a great time and I would definitely stay again . I’ll will post some pics of our room.
