My wife and I stayed at the Hungry Trout during leaf season. One word: wow! The Hungry Trout is at the base of Whiteface Mountain, secluded from the hustle of downtown Lake Placid. The rooms were lovely (brand new, actually) with authentic Adirondack furniture. Our room had a large bay window that framed Whiteface Mountain (not a bad way to... more

We booked this room because it had decent reviews (HOW??) and was close to Santas Workshop and Lake Placid. The room was gross. the room smelled musty, there was mold/mildew in our shower, cobwebs in the corner of the bathroom, dust/caked on crud covering the alarm clock and air conditioner, the bed was hard, and the air conditioner rattled all... more

Management response from

This September, 2009, entry deserves a reply as it has been most embarrassing to this proud owner of the Hungry Trout Resort for 27 years and, more importantly, may unwarrantingly damage the reputation of this fine facility for years to come. For a 10 day period during a constant rain in late August and early September, the room mentioned had,...

i stayed here during ironman week. i usually stay in a condo within walking distance of the lp oval, but as i was not competing ( i was volunteering) i didn't want to spend that amount of money. this is a great value. quiet, scenic, and a spectacular restaurant. yes, it is a bit of a drive to lp, but... more

After driving for 2 nights quite late, we decided to stop early. We had tried to get a room in Lake Placid without a reservation. It was lucky for us that there was too much going on with several competitions in the area. We moved on and wandered into the Hungry Trout and got the last room! The owner, Jerry,... more

If your looking for a place that's close..and I mean..close,to the mountain..this is it! Me and my friends have stayed at many places in the Lake Placid/Saranack lake area..and this is right next to whiteface...so no long drive after your hard day at the mountain..We stayed at a double room with a kichennette and had a great time. The walls are... more

My husband and I stayed at the Hungry Trout for two nights over the September long weekend. The price was great at $97 USD a night...way better value than what was being offered in Lake Placid. I was into shopping and sight seeing so the location was fairly central for myself and my husband wanted to mountain bike at Whiteface... more

I booked the room for my boyfriend and I because he was hoping to go fishing for a day and I wanted to spend time in a relaxing atmosphere and wanted to be able to bring our dog. The Hungry Trout was a perfect solution. Unfortunately due to severely heavy rains the river was too rough to fish, although the... more

We started with a lobster, duck, rabbit ravioli which all three were out of this world. We then had a salad which was new to us mesculin and cranberries(dried) what an idea and so good with the crumbly blue cheese ---really really good. Our main entree was something to behold with garnishes of roses from tomatoes and carrots, surrounding trout ,venison marsala ,dill shrimp... more

Somewhat dismayed by the above review, I nonetheless booked a "package" for two nights of food, lodging and fishing at the Hungry Trout as my father was visiting from California and we wanted to fish the Ausable River. Having stayed in many motels across the country geared for fisherman, we were surprised by the deluxe atmosphere of this motel, definitely... more
