Just spent a wonderful weekend at the Midland Hotel. From the welcoming but unobtrusive hosts to the old world elegance of the decor, this was a unique and very relaxing experience. The location was perfect, close enough to walk to restaurants and shops but not caught up in the hustle of the town centre, the room was comfortable, warm and... More

We found the Midland an outstanding spot to stay; central but quiet, welcoming but not intrusive. On a cold wintry couple of days the heater in the ground floor lounge was on constantly and owners Mauro and Ann promised to fire up the heater in the huge upstairs guests' lounge if needed. That lounge alone is worth a visit. Never... More

Like CJW170, I recommend this hotel for those who enjoy vintage architecture and interior decoration and social history. Upstairs you're staying in a big 1880 hotel that's now shabby but is still reasonably comfortable. Downstairs you're passing through or breakfasting in areas with their 1930s makeover intact, and there's the bonus of a huge old reception room retaining its 1880s... More

We loved staying at a place like this! Having some insight into yester year accommodation, is our preferred way to relax. Our hosts Maurice and Ann were most welcoming and we enjoyed the zany humour! We enjoyed a spacious room with a modern queen size bed and our own spacious bathroom with plenty of shelves to place stuff on! The... More

This was our third stay at the Midland Hotel and every time we stay we enjoy it even more. It is a special experience, especially for those who like history, art and architecture, particularly from the Art Deco period. We arrived by train which added to the experience of stepping back to a time when the world was a simpler,... More

We have been visiting the Midland hotel for more than twenty years and have always found it a unique and enjoyable experience. Mauro makes an excellent host and knows the surrounding area well and can make good dinner and other recommendations. For us this was the perfect way to spend our fiftieth birthday celebration and be able to invite a... More

Overall a very disappointing experience. Bedroom not heated except for a Dimplex, nor cooled (fan not sighted, certainly no aircon!). Separate (but sole occupancy) bathroom across the corridor was a mess - very run down and unfinished with gaps in the walls and floor big enough for cockroaches or even rats to live in the walls! However the room was... More

That bathroom should not have been used. We have an ongoing process of bringing more bathrooms into use as we renovate them. Those photos were taken in the midst of re plumbing and patching of that particular bathroom. This was at the start of greater work. I do not understand why you did not speak to me at the time.... This place was a little odd, quiet and creaky and strikingly old fashioned, but clean, and smelt like soap. It felt a bit like staying at a friends grandma's house. The bathrooms are not modern and are across a small hall, which turned out to be fine as there was hardly anyone else in sight. A unique little Castlemaine adventure.

We planned a train and bike trip from Melbourne. Train to Bendigo, then a ride to Castlemaine. Stayed overnight at the Midland and thoroughly enjoyed it. Oozing with quirky, old-world charm, especially the sitting room. The rooms and beds are very compfortable and the bathroom (not shared) was right across the hall. The continental breakfast was very good and served... More

This art deco B&B, inside a magnificent old private hotel is such a find! The owner Mauro is a delightful host, settled us in efficiently. We took in the sweeping stairs, made our choice of period rooms, and then reveled in the breathtaking sitting room - this room has to be seen to be appreciated. There are some fine quality... More
