We did not enjoy Stonetown (which is dirty, smelly and disintegrating) or Zanzibar for that matter, and cut our trip short. We weren't helped by the humidity or the fact that the island was enduring a long term power outage. In the circumstances, 236 Hurumzi did a very good job of making life tolerable. The house is an architectural gem,... more

This is the most romantic hotel I´ve ever stayed at. The furniture, the architecture and all the lovely plants and flowers - it was all beautiful! A relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and excellent staff. The morning after we arrived we discovered that there was no hot water, so we called the reception and they had an electrician fix it in... more

We stayed at 236 Hurumzi in a regular room for one night during our honeymoon. It was a huge disappointment. We like quirky places that have character. And this one definitely does have character. It is in an old building which has been more-less left unchanged until now. However, the place is totally overpriced for what it is. Our main... more

This is a review of 236 Hurumzi's Tower Top Restaurant and not of the hotel as we didn't stay there - but, we did eat at what must be the highest restaurant in Stone Town and it truly was an experience that tears you between telling everyone you know, and keeping it a closely guarded secret. We went there on... more

We decided to go stay at Hurumzi despite the anxiety I had felt about booking there after reading the mostly negative reviews on this site. I had taken one look at the photos on the web and decided that the first night of our honeymoon could not have a better place (the stone baths are what did it for me!)... more

I have to say I love this hotel. Where else can you get your own rooftop tea garden complete with a swing? You have to be willing to put up with a certain amount of.. problems in an old building. In the third world. The dining area up stairs is far more exciting than the food served there. But who... more

Up front, Stone Town in Zanzibar is a very eclectic spot - some people like it, some don't. Dirt, trash, and age sometimes mars what should be a beautiful town - but it is an old and its people are poor - so take that into account when you go. Stone Town is a UN World Heritage Site and is... more

We had very low expectations after reading the reviews, but it was recommended by two travel companies, so we took a chance. We stayed in the Rose Suite, and it was delightful, though quite pricey. The staff, with the exception of the front desk staff, was very friendly and welcoming and were happy to help us with our Swahili, and... more

The inside of the hotel is very atmospheric, with charming rooms, furniture etc. The location is good if you want to stay in Stonetown - but far away from the nicest beaches. Service is not really very friendly and the food is pretty poor. more

236 Hurumzi, former Emerson & Green is well worth a couple of nights if you like views, architecture and atmosphere of the orient. Our room called "South" was on the roof, with a small garden of our own and a outdoor bath, incredibly nice. Their restaurant and enclosed cafe/restaurant served excellent food. Staffmembers very helpful and becoming. There was on... more
