I was surprised to see the negative reviews on this site and thought it important to share some of the very positive experiences I had. My experience at Hurumzi was phenomenal. There are a few imperfections that I will mention in a moment, but nothing would keep me away from staying here the next time I travel to Zanzibar. In... more

Please do not go here. Awful, awful. If the town had not been in total darkness, we would have just sat outside for the night. We arrived at 11am but did were not checked into our room until 6pm. After some bizarre excuses for why we could not make it into our requested room (North) - at 3pm it was... more

As this was the last night of our fantastic stunning honeymoon, I decidced to splash out on what I thought was a landmark in Stonetown - how wrong I was.. Donyt get me wrong, i can cope with faded grandeur. A place with character and atmosphere if the service is genuine. What I will not tolerate is dirtyness, appalling customer... more

We rather like it at 236 Hurumzi. Maybe it was because we'd read so many mixed reviews here we went with low expectations, or also because of the contrast with where we'd been staying previously in Matemwe that made arriving at Hurumzi feel like being released from prison. It's an eccentric, topsy-turvy building with individual rooms with au naturelle en... more

Difficult to know where to start. A friend had recommended this restaurant. so we booked a meal here in advance and was told by the person on the phone to turn up and pay a deposit before 2:00 on the day of the meal...which we duly did. The rooftop restaurant is indisputably a remarkable setting but that was the extent... more

Our travel agent recommended we stay here for one night as he had an early morning flight out of stone town. We were returning from two weeks in some very high end resorts so were getting used to a certain standard. We were extremely disappointed with this hotel and couldn't wait to get out of there. The journey from the... more

I have to admit that it was a difficult period, because there was no electricity in Zanzibar! But we had higher expectations… the rooms are really fantastic, completely different off everything else, but to noisy. The location is good, the staff indifferent, the restaurant as a nice view, and that’s all. I could recommend this hotel but just for 1... more

The most disappointing thing about 236 Hurumzi is that it has the potential to be great, but totally fails. This hotel is currently a huge rip off and I would recommend friends to take a tour of its architecturally stunning and quirky rooms, but to not stay here as the services are really very poor. The building is atmospheric and... more

Fantastic hotel, beautiful bulding, great location, brilliant rooftop bar/restaurant. But, there were a couple of things that they could have done better (and I hope it's not a sign of complacency because of their reputation.) 1) Dead flowers in room (small thing, but no flowers would be better) 2) Mosquito Net would only stop the laziest of mosquitos, and the... more

A complete disappointment. This is discribed as the most atmospheric hotel in East Africa in many guide books and on arrival it is a let down and anti-climax. Location is perfect, set in the centre of stone Town. Rooms are tired. We were in Topham, water was erratic, no view. What the hotel really lacks is an area to get... more
