Having stayed at most of the Protea Hotels in East Africa, Mbweni Ruins is by far the more exotic location (on par with Amani). Loved the fellow S. African customer service (thanks to Dolf, Marius, and their team). I, my wife and 2 young sons just loved the beach and ocean (tidal) as we couldn't get out of the water... More

We stayed at Protea Mbweni Ruins for for two nights over Easter 2015. We absolutely loved our stay. The location of the hotel is ideal, being only 10 minutes by taxi away from Stone Town. We were surprised by how spectacular the beach was given that it is so close to town, white sandy beach with crystal clear water and... More

What an amazing stay. We appreciated the friendly service, incredible food, rooms with the best view right on the beach. We especially appreciated the invalueble advice and guidance from Dolf GM and Marius F & B for people relocating to the island. This hotel is rich in history aswell which makes it even more special. Highly recommend

It's hard to praise the Mbweni Ruins too highly. Everything about it worked for us; the airy rooms, the picturesque beach, the idyllic jetty (perfect for sundowners), the restaurant and bar, and particularly for me, the beautiful garden with its astounding collection of over 120 species of palm trees. The staff were very friendly and not too formal and attentive... More

I stayed at the hotel in early January. I have been to a lot of places in Zanzibar and was not expecting too much. The hotel is located close to the airport and it was just a one night stay. Wow, was I impressed. The service was quick with a lot of energy. The service staff was very friendly. I... More

We, my wife and our two children, stayed at Mbweni for a longer period during 2014/2015. We can't imagine a better place to stay. Whether with children alone or with family and friends. The staff are friendly, relaxed and warm and you feel at home. The place is beautiful and quiet and the beach and the environment of the place... More

Nestled on the quiet side of the island, out of the way from all island activity, was a peaceful paradise. The sunsets were breathtaking, the food delicious, and the rooms were spotless. The hotel shuttle moved us to and from the hotel without delay. The staff was friendly, courteous, and accommodating. For a quiet get-a-way, this is it!

This past month was my 4th visit to Mbweni Ruins and I can't imagine staying anywhere else for a relaxing time to catch up on' jet lag'. Mbweni is a short ride from the air field, quiet yet close enough to Stone Town for a leisurely tour, shopping trip or snorkeling adventure. The rooms are well decorated, clean and comfortable... Recently spent 4 days in Mbweni Ruins. The staff are all friendly and helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I believe the hotel is under-rated in Zanzibar at this time. Their service standards are high, and if there's any problem it is dealt with courteously promptly and efficiently. The food was excellent and they were very informative providing us... More
