This hotel is exceptional for its acre or so of beautifully kept gardens with a wide variety of trees and plants and lovely walkways. The restaurant is open air and built on several layers with a spectacular panoramic ocean view. There are lovely old Zanzibar-style furnishings, a long wooden pier to swim from at low tide or just enjoy for... More

Had lovely lunch here over looking the mangroves in the Sea. The food was fantastic a seafood biriyani simply yummy packed with local spices and fresh fish. This is a slick operation, largely due to the South African Hotel Manager who is charming and very informative and clearly runs a tight and happy ship. The staff are all wonderful and... More

Nice rom, clean, Internett. Very frendly straff, secure. Nice restaurant with superb wiev. Beach, beach bar, AC. Shuttle to Stonetown. Terrible road to the Hotel but worth the hazzle. Food is in my opinion very good. Away from noice, very relaxing.

The hotel is of reasonable value. Things are generally in working order. The atmosphere is peaceful and comfortable, which we appreciated. It has a pool, and located right on the beach. Some (potential) let-downs include: - location: town is 10-15 minutes drive away. The ride is bumpy for the first 5 minutes. Shuttle to town operates three times a day,... More

The Good: Well, what a lovely setting, so close to Stone Town. Nice quaint, quiet and peaceful (until ... read below) setting, huge gardens, some staff excellent service - thank you Marius! Great swimming at high tide, take a paddle through the mangroves. The Bad: Paradise plundered, over weekends (only, I hope). Wow, we arrived back late after a trip... More

Mbweni Ruins was a lovely, peaceful retreat outside of Stone Town, but still close enough to go in for a day trip. We stayed in number 14, which was a top floor room at the end and has a lovely balcony overlooking the beach. Our room was quiet and had a good air conditioner. Mbweni Ruins is a great base... More

great location, impressive mangrove-forest, nice cozy swimming pool, great food, friendly service and all this just 5 minutes outside Stone Town. Ideal for residents who want to spend a lazy Sunday not too far away.

I did not wish to stay in Stone Town but wanted to be close. Protea Hotel was ideal as far as distance to ST was concerned. I was more than pleasantly surprised to see how beautiful its location was.
