We stayed 2 nights in this place. When we arrived, they told us that the hotel was full. So, they gave us key for a furnished apartment located outside the hotel in the Mercury's house located at 50 meters from the hotel. The apartment was clean and well furnished but too far from the restaurant and the swimming pool. It... More

We got 2 rooms, 01 and 04, not connected. We are a family and with small kids connected rooms are far more better. Room 04 is right in front of the family and there was a lot of noise early in the morning while they were preparing breakfast, moreover while they cleaned the floor of the Restaurant they flooded the... After much research, I booked the Dhow Palace for my recent two night stay in Stone Town. I was very disappointed when they did not have a room for me upon arrival. They wanted to move me to a new modern property, but when I complained that I had chosen the Dhow for the historic ambiance, suggested the Tembo House... More

By African standard a great hotel, but not very personal. The staff is used to Tourists that only stay one or two Nights and make little to no effort to be varm and welcoming. Everything is very professional and cold, with was a bit disapointing to us as we have met the African hospitality in hotels way more simple and... More

We were in Stone Town for our medical elective and stayed in Tembo House Hotel for a few nights before moving to Forodhani park and had an exceptional stay (even though it was short). The hotel room was large, very comfortable, large poster beds, good sized bathroom, hot water, high speed wifi, and AC. Staff and managers were all exceptionally... More

Tembo House is a perfect place in Stonetown, combining a visit to the city with a relax, sun ..pool moment. I guess this is the only hotel having a pool inside the city limits. Price quality a good place, nice rooms...will go back for sure when passing Stonetown again!

There is no doubting the character, history and location of this hotel. It is also quite refreshing that such an iconic building in such a prime location is independently owned. I stayed for two days and found several aspects of the hotel to be quite average. The plumbing is poor and hot water was practically non existent. I stayed in... More

I stayed at the Tembo House Hotel for one night during a work-related trip that had me flying through Zanzibar from Arusha to Dar. I decided to pay more to book a "balcony/sea view" room (there were non sea view rooms available) so I could spend time out on the balcony enjoying the breeze from the ocean before I had... More

Besides it's superior location, the staff at Tembo House hotel were absolutely wonderful, every request was met with diligence and a smile! Wi Fi was a bit spotty, but hey it's Zanzibar! Forget about the Wi Fi and go cruise the streets of Stone Town! Breakfast was amazing, as was the proximity to the ocean. As a solo traveller, I... More

We stayed 3 nights in July. Location on the beach was superb. Close to all the shops in StoneTown, and the Foroghani Park where we had tea at the stalls set up there on Saturday night. The atmosphere of the hotel very in keeping with StoneTown. Rooms perhaps a bit small, and I guess a bit dated, but hotel doesn't... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A Unique experience awaits at the Tembo House&Apartments.Tembo House Hotel&Apartments is situated at the heart of Zanzibar Stone Town by the picturesque seafront. The magnificent main Building has had various functions over the past centuries. Between 1834 and 1884 it served as the American Consulate in Zanzibar then passed on to become the trading offices of Cowasjee Dinshaw & Partners. Their headquarters was in Aden(what now is know as the Port of Suez), and with trading posts notably in most of the British Protectorate areas, it became the largest trading Company in the India Ocean. To this day , the name of Cowasjee Dinwash & Partners is still visible at the main entrance of Tembo House Hotel.Tembo House Hotel has seen a few celebrities pass through is doors during the consulate era, the Conwasjee Dinwash era and as a Hotel. Mahatma Ghandi, stayed here a few weeks with the Dinwash family on his journey back to India from South Africa 1930. As a rising new star in the British, and the world music scene, Freddie Mercury and his family used to retreat to what is now ”Marashi” apartment whenever they came back to Zanzibar on holidays.Next to Tembo House Hotel is also what used to be the British Consulate, where in 1874, Dr. Livingstone’s body was brought before embarking on its long journey back to England.A stone throw away is the Beit-al-Ajaib of House of wonders. This landmark building, is the largest and by far, the tallest building in Stone Town. Flanking the Beit-al-Ajaib is the Old Fort on one side and the Palace Museum on the other side.In other words, Tembo House Hotel is situated on a prime location, you need not go far to find the shops, the restaurants and the Historical sites that Zanzibar Stone Town has on offer.Zanzibar port is just 5 minutes drive away and the Zanzibar International Airport a further 15 minutes away.Welcome home away from home ... more   less
