A wonderful quirky victorian hotel on the beach. Fabulous staff, and breakfast watching the fishing boats under Indian Almond trees... and they have a resident owl, lovely pool, fantastic spiced coffee at breakfast.

There is not much more to say than WOW! We had the most incredible stay at the Tembo Hotel. The hotel is beautifully appointed, with magnificent views of the sea. The beach in front of the hotel is really nice and clean and right in the hub of fishing and adventure boats. The hotel is also very close to Stone... More

The hotel experience at Tembo was a highlight to our holiday in Tanzania! The hotel oozes culture and an essence of flavour and excitement from the moment you walk in; the decor is like no other we had seen in Zanzibar and the staff ever helpful and smiling! We stayed in a lovely Suite and enjoyed every minute, it was... More

After a two week camping and treking safari in Tanzania, coming to this restored hotel with its beach and pool, and hot water was great. Zanzibar is no doubt not up to European standards in terms of cleanliness, but this is a lovely typical building with nice welcoming people in the heart of Stone Town (the historical heart of Zanzibar).

The main attribute of Tembo House is the location - on the seafront and close to the main tourist street of Stone Town - but it has a nice swimming pool as well. Otherwise very disappointing - the rooms are quite gloomy, dark wood and low voltage lights, and our family room was much too small. On arrival we were... More

The hotel itself is great. Charming atmosphere and friendly staff. The included breakfast is also decent, but i recommend you eat your lunch and dinner elsewere. The seaside restaurant has a great view, but the staff is slow and forgetful. The food itself was also quite disappointing. Schrimps were very dry, and food was often cold before it reached us.... We stayed 2 nights in this place. When we arrived, they told us that the hotel was full. So, they gave us key for a furnished apartment located outside the hotel in the Mercury's house located at 50 meters from the hotel. The apartment was clean and well furnished but too far from the restaurant and the swimming pool. It... More

We got 2 rooms, 01 and 04, not connected. We are a family and with small kids connected rooms are far more better. Room 04 is right in front of the family and there was a lot of noise early in the morning while they were preparing breakfast, moreover while they cleaned the floor of the Restaurant they flooded the... After much research, I booked the Dhow Palace for my recent two night stay in Stone Town. I was very disappointed when they did not have a room for me upon arrival. They wanted to move me to a new modern property, but when I complained that I had chosen the Dhow for the historic ambiance, suggested the Tembo House... More

By African standard a great hotel, but not very personal. The staff is used to Tourists that only stay one or two Nights and make little to no effort to be varm and welcoming. Everything is very professional and cold, with was a bit disapointing to us as we have met the African hospitality in hotels way more simple and... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A Unique experience awaits at the Tembo House&Apartments.Tembo House Hotel&Apartments is situated at the heart of Zanzibar Stone Town by the picturesque seafront. The magnificent main Building has had various functions over the past centuries. Between 1834 and 1884 it served as the American Consulate in Zanzibar then passed on to become the trading offices of Cowasjee Dinshaw & Partners. Their headquarters was in Aden(what now is know as the Port of Suez), and with trading posts notably in most of the British Protectorate areas, it became the largest trading Company in the India Ocean. To this day , the name of Cowasjee Dinwash & Partners is still visible at the main entrance of Tembo House Hotel.Tembo House Hotel has seen a few celebrities pass through is doors during the consulate era, the Conwasjee Dinwash era and as a Hotel. Mahatma Ghandi, stayed here a few weeks with the Dinwash family on his journey back to India from South Africa 1930. As a rising new star in the British, and the world music scene, Freddie Mercury and his family used to retreat to what is now ”Marashi” apartment whenever they came back to Zanzibar on holidays.Next to Tembo House Hotel is also what used to be the British Consulate, where in 1874, Dr. Livingstone’s body was brought before embarking on its long journey back to England.A stone throw away is the Beit-al-Ajaib of House of wonders. This landmark building, is the largest and by far, the tallest building in Stone Town. Flanking the Beit-al-Ajaib is the Old Fort on one side and the Palace Museum on the other side.In other words, Tembo House Hotel is situated on a prime location, you need not go far to find the shops, the restaurants and the Historical sites that Zanzibar Stone Town has on offer.Zanzibar port is just 5 minutes drive away and the Zanzibar International Airport a further 15 minutes away.Welcome home away from home ... more   less
