This hotel has managed to keep some of it old world charms with beautiful communal room upstairs, old wooden beds and arabic style showers. Its a bit rundown and the manager is a grump but the pool is a nice oasis from the hot city. On Sunday they do a local style breakfast and we really enjoyed it - with... more

This hotel is supposed to be one of the best in Stone Town and if this is correct I would hate to see one of the worst! When we arrived the room wasn’t ready but they took us to it anyway and we had to look at the last participants dirty bed sheets and rubbish etc while they showed us... more

We were a little nervous about this hotel given the mixed reviews, however, our experience was a very positive one. We had two rooms, both on the top floor, one with wonderful views straight out to sea. We had no problems with water pressure, etc. The only thing that was obviously lacking maintenance were the timber shutters. The lunch we... more

Tembo House was a decent stay but it was right on the beach and a great pool. The rooms looked like a taste of India and weren't very modern but classy. The hotel had no internet what so ever, so this fact didn't help. Overall if you get stuck with this hotel its fine and if you have a good... more

I think the jury is still out on this place. It's Muslim run (like many hotels on the island but this is more strict). No alcohol served on the premises nor allowed on the premises (they blame it on a lack of liquor license or something). Not a big deal as Livingstone's is right across the alley if you want... more

Superb small hotel in an ideal position for exploring StoneTown. Ok, our room in the old part was a bit small - but how long do you spend in a bedroom anyway. We had a balcony overlooking the pool with a side view of the sea. The decor reminded me of the 'colonial' film settings with a bathroom and shower... more

We stayed in the Tembo for 3 nights and had a delightful time. The location was excellent and the rooms and pool were just right for us. The staff was friendly -- helping us with questions and the rooms were plenty spacious. The AC was good and the food was terriric. more

We stopped at Tembo for our first two nights in Zanzibar, after safari on the mainland and before moving onto Pongwe beach. We wanted somewhere central in Stone Town and our travel agent recommended Tembo. The decor is amazing. We were in room 14 - I wouldn't say it was either too small or overly spacious, a decent size for... more

The Tembo has an excellent central location, inbetween the fort and Serena Inn. Ask for a room on the top floor overlooking the sea (I think we were in #27). Our room was large and airy, with a massive bathroom, as well as a balcony overlooking the sea. The room & hotel furnishings seem to be all ex-British or Indian... more

We loved this hotel, no, it is not brand new, but if you go to Stone Town, you will see that nothing is and that's the charm! The location was super, right on the beach and in the center of town within walking distance of everything. Cute rooms, we felt like Arabian princesses! Check out Livingstone Bar next door on... more
