Looked forward to our stay at a $470 per night room at Sunset Beach and the only thing impressive was the view. The room was a little box with very tiny bathroom and semi-private terrace with no overhead protection. We did not stay and forfeited the $450. Read the reviews after coming home and glad we did not stay because... more

Forget all of the naysayers about the Sunset Beach Hotel. We couldn't have been happier with our stay during the hotel's opening weekend. As for staff attitude, there was absolutely none. To a person, the staff was charming and helpful --- from allowing us an early check-in (unannounced due to unexpectedly -- and happily -- catching an early ferry from... more

Over indulgence to the nth degree. The hotel has an authentic beach clean white personality with splashes of color and imagination. Immaculate rooms with fine appointments and impeccable service from an haute staff. The food was beautifully curated and views are a stunner. An absolute haven for calm leisure and sinful play. Fabulous music is a mainstay and decompression is... more

What a shame. The hotel (motel really!) could be fantastic. It's location is excellent , the restaurant is nice and serves good food, even if it's trying too hard and therefore becomes a theme restaurant. It gets too busy at weekends and only for those who like lots of noise from Americans trying to be trendy Europeans!! although the most... more

As my husband noted, this place is a $500/night Motel 6. The room was dirty. There is just no way around it. Even after our "maid service" the day after we checked in, the room was still dingy. The staff was absolutely incompetent and smug. They failed to do basic things like have a kid's bed ready in our room... more

One of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at. My wife and I would not go back if they comped us a room. Problems: I) We arrived on Sunday night to a scene right out of the worst of the worst Hamptons. There were 400 - 500 people at the hotel to party (the hotel only has about 14... more

My girlfriend and I wanted to have a weekend away in Long Island without the hassle of the Hamptons and Sunset Beach was our choice. The place basically emulates the experience of the South of France on Shelter Island and thankfully, is isolated from all the drama on Long Island. Rooms are something straight out of a Pottery Barn catalog... more

We’ve just returned from a week at Sunset Beach, an interesting spot. We stayed during the week ($250 per night) as opposed to over the weekend ($450 per night) we had a couple of meals at the hotel and a couple in Shelter Island Heights. As is noted in many of the other reviews Sunset Beach is an expensive place.... more

I heard a lot about Sunset Beach and wanted to check the place out for myself despite all the mixed reviews. So my girlfriend and I went for a couple nights. We arranged for a taxi to pick us up through the hotel from the ferry port on Shelter Island. There is only one taxi service on the island with... more

I was staying in New York city and decided to take a break out in Shelter Island. Sunset Beach was perfect - although only a short visit, the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room itself was very spacious, well equipped and spotlessly clean. The private patio was a huge bonus and offered a fantastic view of the beach,... more
