Historic hotel with a great porch for people watching. Think bed and breakfast for the accommodations. If you do not like quaint and old style decor, move over to the sleek and stylish Barons Cove which is newly renovated.

Ok, their lobster BTL seriously is AMAZING!!! Love coming here and getting prime real estate on their porch for lunch and dinner. Their staff is by far the BEST and most attentive in the entire Hamptons! We've never had a bad meal here and can't believe how reasonable their prices are for both food and wine selection for what you... More

We didn't know what the weather would do on this sultry late July day on Long Island, so my daughter, son in law and I decided to take a little drive out to the Hamptons. After making a short stop in Southhampton we continued on to Sag Harbor and lunch at the American Hotel. We called ahead for a reservation... More

Rustic, quaint, old-style decor, no tv, nice brunch, great wine selection. A quiet place except on Friday and Saturday nights when the bar and restaurant are plagued by the monied crowd. No better place to stay in the town, its steps away from everything Sag Harbor has to offer. However, the hotel cannot accommodate older patrons who have trouble with... More

The American Hotel in Sag Harbor is an institution. It was built in the mid 19th century in what was a whaling town and is now the "unhamptons." Actually, it becomes more chic each year and gentrification is a bit of a problem unless you want truffle fries. However the town still has the charm and the old movie theater... More

We ended up with suite 15, A very large and comfortable suite on the third floor overlooking the main street in the "Harbor". Quiet and nicely furnished for comfort. Access for the less amble might be a concern for some. The food and service at their restaurant was excellent. My spouse's halibut was prepared perfectly and heaped with chunks of... More

Great lodging, great food and great service with an added great fro the patrons. The bar crowd was friendly and civilized. The room on the third floor was elegant old world and had every amenity except a TV...which was fine.

My wife, my cousin, his girlfriend and I had lunch here on a Sunday in June 2014 on the porch. The meal started out well enough: local Hog's Neck oysters (which were to die for), and beef carpaccio, which was delectable. The bloody marys were good too. The entrees, however, were a major disappointment. My wife ordered the Black Angus... More

We had Christmas lunch at The American Hotel today. The food was uneven. The greens in the salad were wilted. Pea soup and duck consomme were tasty. The roast duck was fatty and the consistency of the meat was mealy. The apple crisp for dessert was awful-the "crisp" part was soggy and doughy. The service was attentive, but courses came... More

Having dinner at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor made me sad. It wasn't the throwback elegance and romantic atmosphere of the dimly lit dining room, or the delectable crab cakes and perfectly prepared vegetables, or the attentive service of the professional waiters that brought on my melancholy. It was the fact that my husband was 1500+ miles away. He... More
